Most of the publisher is still unknown about ISBN. There is no compulsory provision for applying ISBN made by government. The objectives put to solve those problems are to find out the present standard of using ISBN number in book publication, to make aware of ISBN to the publisher & author in Nepal. In research period traditional and web literature are reviewed from different web sites. The research has focused Tribhuvan University Central Library for its study as TUCL is National Centre for ISBN n Nepal. The short questionnaire was distributed to publisher, author, librarian and others who are interested about it. The data collected through direct contact, email, interview with users. The collected data are tabulated and analyzed using Microsoft excel data sheet. The studies are limited within Kathmandu valley, TUCL, publishers, authors, and author publishers. Literature is reviewed. 30 questionnaire were distributed, among all only 23 questionnaires were returned. Among 23,10 respondents are authors, 8 are publishers and 5 publishers. The introducing the system led to simplification of ordering, stock control, accounting and export procedure in many branches of book industry. Our country Nepal is late for introducing the system because of reason like sad information policy of the government: delaying in decision making process, non alliance of the professional in the process of introducing the system Nepal. The researcher has been concluded if there is any sub agency to provide ISBN system may be more effective in Nepal. It is hard to come Kathmandu valley for the purpose of assigning ISBN. On the basis of this study most all of the respondents are familiar about ISBN and using it in their publication. The researcher has concluded that the national agency, TUCL should inform about the ISBN to the each and every corner of the country. As this system is beneficial and new among the users, it is necessary to increase its users.Item Study of Kathmandu University Central Library with Special Reference to SOUL and Manual Operating System(Department of Library and Information Science, 2015) Jha, Meena KumariThe thesis entitled “Study of Kathmandu University Central Library with special reference to SOUL and Manual Operating System” is a comparison of two physical forms of operating system. Moreover in the field of Ayurveda Literature, the work has not been done. Due to lack of annotated bibliography the library users faced various problems. The study basically investigates that the most of the modern Doctors’ attitude towards the information retrieval tools like bibliography and their idea about the information retrieve tool. Because of an important tool for information retrieval annotated bibliography is not well-developed in our libraries. On the one hand most of Doctors do not have good idea about the nature of bibliography on the other hand users are not familiarize to annotated bibliography. Total 50 questionnaires are distributed to the respondents and 48 respondents are returned fill the questionnaires. The data show that 96% of respondents are given response to the questionnaires. The respondents are doctors, doctors + teachers, teachers, officers, staffs, nurses and students (internees). The total number of respondents; doctors are 15, doctor + teachers are 8, teachers are 3, officer is only one, staffs are 7, nurses are 2 and students (internees) are 12. This research study shows that most of the doctors are responded toward the questioner for to make and maintain annotated bibliography of Ayurveda literatures and periodicals in the libraries. To find out the present scenario of annotated bibliography previous literature sare reviewed. Similarly, this study is based upon the structured question as well as the qualitative research approach. In this thesis data are presented which are taken from qualitative research techniques. Equally, 22 volumes of Ayurveda Literature and 10 Journals are commented with informative annotation by their time chronology. It focuses lie on the PhD scholars of TU and their satisfaction level at the time of retrieval of needed information from those libraries. It serves as a problem founding materials so as to elicit their views and suggestions for the further improvement of the library services on offer. An advanced academic degree awarded by universities is PhD degree. Research is the fact finding process and PhD degree can achieved after a long and deep research. PhD is the highest degree one can earn. The PhD has become a requirement for a carrier asa university professor or researcher in most fields. Most of the universities today recruit the researchers for serious study on their related field and award them by the doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. For serious research the society should be advanced in knowledge preservation to presentation. Library can play vital role for the research process. Without information there is no possibility of research; and library housed large amount of information in various forms and formats. In information advanced society most of the information products should be available easily. Storage of the information is not more valuable if that is not available in easy way.To reach the targeted group; the researcher used descriptive research design. Data collection and data analysis procedure are the other methods used for the research analysis. Some scholars’ were interviewed indirectly and the recorded interview was analyzed at the time of data analysis. This thesis has documented various important aspects of libraries of TU.This research study consists of six chapters. First chapter deals with the introduction of the study. The second chapter deals with literature review. The third chapter is focus of study. Research methodology, population, data collection and data analysis procedure are discussed in the fourth chapter. The main purpose of this study has identified the status and utilization of school libraries. The target of the researcher has learned out the problems encountered by the school library users and gather ideas regarding their needs, and their attitudes towards the resources, services, management and practices of the school libraries. For these, the most popular three public school libraries i.e. Padama Kanaya Secondary School (PKSS), Padmodya Secondary School (PSS) and Shahid Sukra Secondary School (SSSS) have selected, and a field survey has done to collect responses from each library. The analysis of this study includes 50 respondents of three different public schools. The questionnaires were distributed to the students of the related schools when the researcher visited school libraries. The total population of this study were 70 users. Among the respondents, 15 (30%) respondents belong to PKSS, 21 (42%) respondents has belonged to SSSS. Similarly, 14(28%) respondents belonged to PSS Library. According to the findings of the research, larger numbers of students (74%) do not become member of their school library. There is no systematic library in their school. Though they have libraries in their school, card system is not practicing. Most of the students go to library to consult reference books whereas 8% of them visit library to enjoy with library materials. 12 % of students go to library to borrow textbooks. From this, the main purposes of the students’ library visit have seemed to be for consulting reference books and to participate in other recreational activities. It has found that 36% students use reference section and activities section. It has found that the majority of the students (70 %) are satisfied with the opening hour of the library. But only a small number of (30 %) of students have seemed to be dissatisfied with the present opening hour of the library. Larger number of students’ i.e.60 % use other libraries, personal books and recreations where as 40 % of students do not use other libraries except their students' library. The majority of students (62%) have reported that they do not get document on time due to the inadequate collection of the library whereas 38 % of students mentioned that they have got document on time. It has found that the majority of the students (60 %) do not get all the relevance information whereas 40 % of students have satisfied with the information available in the library. Majority of students have satisfied with the cooperation they receive from the library staff. 64 % of the respondents answered in positive when they have asked whether the librarian help to them. Only 36 % of them are not satisfied with the cooperation of library staff. Regarding the knowledge about library catalogue, the majority of the students (72 %) have found unknown about the library catalogue, whereas 28 % of them have known little about the catalogue. Most of the students (76 %) have found to be capable of searching information in the library themselves, where as 24 % responded that they search information with the help of library staff. Despite having a lot of difficulties schools have found positive to establish and run a library in their school. School communities have been trying to overcome with their problem and provide students to give the opportunity to use a library. Some of the schools have managed either a library or a reading center. Students as well as staffs were found using it regularly. Books have mainly circulated and newspaper reading was done by senior grade students, teachers and staff. Junior students were expanding knowledge through general knowledge book and getting entertainment through picture books. Although the school community with library/reading room facilities were having such benefit, but still all of the schools were underprivileged of it. Absence of library in school was a big disadvantage for the students as well as teachers. Regular library period could give a chance to be familiar with new information and knowledge. Students who did not have extra time could get benefit from the library where the school administrations separated time for the library purpose. Therefore, the libraries need to address all such shortcomings to improve their existing conditions and enhance positive attitude of the library users.Item Current Status of Library Networking and Resource Sharing within T.U. Library Systems of Kathmandu Valley(Department of Library and Information Science, 2014) Neupane, ChiranjibiThe thesis entitled "CURRENT STATUS OF LIBRARY NETWORKING AND RESOURCE SHARING WITHIN T. U. LIBRARY SYSTEMS OF KATHMANDU VALLEY" in general based upon the current situation of networking and resource sharing among the libraries of Kathmandu Valley. Today, it is virtually not possible for any library, however big and rich to acquire all the information or publications. As well as libraries are collecting, processing and organizing the same documents making huge investment of money, manpower, materials and time. Networking and resource sharing is the best and effective measure to solve many of these problems and which allows effective use of the available information and knowledge sources between and among the entire libraries' network for the users community. It is not known that how many libraries are participating in resource sharing activities in Kathmandu Valley by using computer networks. CDS/ISIS library software is used by most of the libraries in Nepal. However these libraries have not maintained Common Communication Format (CCF). The objectives of this study are (1) To study the existing coordination activities of T. U. library resources, facilities and services, (2) To find out the status and availability of professional manpower, work procedures, and resources, (3) To suggest a plan and policy for resource sharing and networking among these campus libraries. The studies are limited to seven libraries of Kathmandu Valley. In the context of Nepal, there have been a few studies on the topic resource sharing and networking through computer networks. So, some of the related international literature have studied. The study has focused on the digital resource sharing especially bibliographic database and e-resources which is easy to share among the libraries. Most of the libraries of Kathmandu valley are using ISIS library software. The population of the study is a number of those libraries which uses ISIS library software for creating database. Seven libraries have been selected as a sample for the data collection. The researcher has used a set of questionnaire including 22 questions, informal interview, and observation as a basic instruments of data collection. Different types of responses are found on the way of data collection. All of the responses are analyzed and presented diagrammatically in the form of table and then tabulated data are presented diagrammatically in the form of bar-diagram and pie-chart. All questions are analyzed and presented sequentially and certain findings drawn out. According to the objectives, the major findings of this study are shown as. All libraries are interested to provide resource sharing services but among the libraries have no any co-operation or agreement for resource sharing. 50% of libraries are providing resource sharing facility through their website. But this is not formal way of resource sharing on the principle of co-operation among the libraries. Because there is no any library network in Kathmandu valley to co-ordinate between and among the libraries. All libraries under the study have maintained bibliographic databases of their collections in computer and all of the libraries under the scope have known about CCF for creating databases. All libraries are interested to provide online resources but they haven't produced their own e-resources. They are providing access to some of the international eresources like JSTOR, Project Muse, AGORA, HINARI, AsiaJOL, NepJOL etc. which are freely available along with TUCL is also providing Nepali Journals online (NepJOL). To provide effective resource sharing service to the users, firstly there is urgent need to develop a policy on library network to connect the libraries on the basis of co-operation or agreement. All libraries should be focus online resources like e-books, e-journals etc. and also focus on e-databases of all the library materials. Every library should go ahead on the principle of cooperation to fulfill their users' demand in this information explosion age.Item Open Source Software (OSS) for Library Management - A Study(Faculty of Information Science, 2010-08) Chauhan, Lal BahadurNot availableItem Nepal Library And Information Consortium (NELIC) In Facilitating Access To E-Resources(Department of Library and Information Science, 2015-10) Tamang, MeenaThe thesis entitled “Nepal Library and Information Consortium (NeLIC) in facilitating access to e-resources” has been carried out to find out role of NeLIC in providing access to scholarly e-resources for the fulfillment of scholarly information needs of the library users. NeLIC provides access to scholarly e-resources to its member libraries. But no research has been carried out with regarding to NeLIC and its e-resources service. Review of ten different national and international literature related to this topic has been done. Cases of different library consortia were studied. The major objectives of this study are: to point out the importance of library consortium, to find out whether the scholarly information needs of users are fulfilled or not, to obtain valuable opinions and suggestions from the librarians and users, to find out which resources are being able to fulfill information need of users. A set of questionnaire was distributed to the library users of seven member libraries of NeLIC. The librarians/information service providers were interviewed. The data collected from the library users and librarians has been analyzed and presented with the tables and charts. Simple statistical tools were used for the analysis of data. The major findings of this research are: JSTOR is nominated as the most appropriate e-resource by most of the library users, most of the users have commented that the e-resources available through NeLIC are useful but not sufficient, library users have demanded for addition of more e-resources related to management, development studies, Research Gate, etc. Various suggestions were made for the better e-resources service and better performance of NeLIC. Various recommendations were made like NeLIC should subscribe e-books as well, NeLIC should hire full time staffs so that they can devote their full concentration for the development of NeLIC, NeLIC should subscribe more e-resources related to management, science and technology, NeLIC should conduct different trainings related to accessing information through e-resources.Item Effectiveness of SDI Service for Medical Professional Relating to Central Medical Library, NGMCTH, Kohalpur(Department of Library and Information Science, 2009) Chaudhary, SangramIt is a research study entitled "Effectiveness of SDI service for medical professionalsrelating to Central Medical library, NGMCTH, Kohalpur". SDI service is a personalizedcurrent awareness service meant for an individual or a group of users having identicalinformation needs to keep them abreast of the latest development in the field of their interest. The statement of problem is that effectiveness of SDI service of this library has not beenstudied to improve it. The objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of and toevaluate the SDI service system for medical professional relating to Central Medical Library,NGMCTH, Kohalpur where it has been carried out from 2065/3/10 to 2065/5/28. It focuses the SDI service of thecentral medical library, NGMCTH, Kohalpur. The descriptive and survey methods havebeen used. 50 library users only faculty members and medical officers who are receivingmanual SDI service are randomly selected and data are collected from questionnaire. Thecollected data have been analyzed qualitatively and illustrated in necessary tables, diagramsand chart forms for analysis. Out of total library users included, 23(46%), 10(20%), 8(16%)and 9(18%) visit the library regularly, Irregularly, frequently and sometimes. 15(30%) and35(70%) visit the library with purpose of patient care and research, teaching, patient care, continuing education respectively. 38(76%) search information with help of library staffs and12(24%) direct method .42(84%) responded that SDI service is major value and only 8 (16%)responded that it is moderate volume. Except 15 (30%) for patient care, 35(70%) takeadvantage of SDI service for research, teaching, patient care and continuous education.18(36%) have received SDI service in time and 32(64%) have complained not receivedservice in time. The frequency of SDI service provided to 12(24%), 21(42%), 5(10%) and12(24%) is regularly, irregularly, frequently and sometimes respectively, All the users50(100%) read the article if SDI citation is pertinent. 20(40%) have found many relevantarticles and 30(60%) have found few relevant articles. 17(34%) satisfies with SDI servicewhereas 33(66%) show dissatisfaction to the service. Among 33 dissatisfaction users,4(12.12%) are because of too many irrelevant articles and no description of topics which theyhad request, 12(36.36%%) are due to uncover adequately their research , Similarly 6(18.18%) are because of changing their topics and interesting in new topics , 3(9.1%)aredue to overflow of many articles and like to topic narrowed and 8(24.24%) are because of no current information. 5 (10%) are much better informed, 14(28%) are somewhat better informed and 31(62%) are not better informed but certain of not missing anything important. All users 50(100%) desire to continue SDI service including the users who had considered the service to be moderate value. It is found that more library users visit the library regularly with purpose of research teaching patient care, and continuing education, it is major valuable service to them, they user it for research, teaching, patient care and continuing education purpose, receiving service more irregularly and sometimes than regularly and frequently, read the article if SDI citation is pertinent, least users are receiving service in time, finding relevant articles, satisfied and better informed and all users desire to continue the participation in this service. It is concluded that SDI system is an effective and a highly acceptable current awareness information service to keep up to date with current information related to library users' need. So far, the performance of providing SDI service to its users by the library is not satisfactory. It recommends warmly welcome library users, friendly behavior, responsibility of providing information service, building up useful collections ,properly trained library staffs, knowledge of literature the library collects and needs of library users, ability to act as shrewed matchers between information sources and users, use of computer catalogue, ascertain accurately information needs of users, providing relevant and current information, feedback of users, constants evaluation of users profiles, use of e-journals sources such as HINARI, COCHRANGE, other medical databases, availability of pertinent cited articles, and continuity to provide SDI service to its users effectively and efficiently.Keywords:-SDI service, Information services, Medical libraries, Mr.Sangram Chaudhary Central Department of Library and Information Science, T.U., KirtipurItem PERI e-resources used in Educational and Research Institutions of Nepal(Department of Library and Information Science, 2007) Subedi, Sagar RajInformation is the vital source for learning and teaching. Now a days e-resources are becoming the vital sources for study and research sector. Internet, e- resources are very good example. There are different types of e- resources like e- journal, e-books databases in web. Some e- resources are free and some are not. PERI e-resource is databases where full texts of more than 25,000journals are available. PERI stands for Program for Enhancement of Research Information is an important program of the INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publication). PERI has four important components. It delivers information to enable researcher and scientists to acquire international academic and scholarly information. It strengthen publishing providing opportunity for the enhancement of skills in book and journal publishing in print or electronic and enhancing information. It enhances information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills to the librarians and researchers, University and research institute and it provides access to national and regional research. Tribhuvan University Central library (TUCL) is established in 1959 AD which has more than 300,000 documents. TUCL is the largest library of Nepal in many aspects. TUCL is the country coordinating agency of PERI program for Nepal. TUCL is the National ISBN (International Standard Book Number) Agency for Nepal to distribute ISBN to Nepalese publications since 2000 AD. TUCL is doing different program for promotion of PERI e-resources in Nepal. Nepali scholars, students, researchers and other users have extensively used PERI e- resources. Altogether more than 1, 20,000 articles from different database are downloaded in the year 2006. More than 200 institutions have registered to have access to PERI e- resources from Nepal. The numbers are increasing. The cost of such e-resources is £47, 171. The Danish Government, DFID- UK and NORAD have provided the financial assistance needed for the purpose. This includes some activities completed after PERI introduced in Nepal. The thesis cites few bibliographies of PERI published in Nepal. In our survey about 100% respondents agree that the PERI e-resources is very beneficial for the Nepalese educational sector. Different status group of education, scholars and scientist have agreed that the e-resources are needed for the all round development as well as improvements of all sectors. The respondent (for the years 2003-2007) have expressed their opinion regarding the sustainability are as follows: Many expressed that institution should pay of the sustainability for the PERI e- resources; some expressed government should pay of the sustainability for the PERI e- resources. Very few are on opinion that the donor agency should help for the sustainability for the PERI e- resources. The author suggest that there has not significant improvement in Nepalese economy (i.e. Nepalese economy is same as that of 2003 when PERI was introduce). Therefore donor should continuously support until Nepalese economy is improved.Item User's Study on Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science,Rampur Campus Library at Rampur Chitwan(Department of Library and Information Science, 2008) Bohara, Rudra BahadurNot AvailableItem Boolean Operator in Logical And Efficient information Retrieval(Department of Library and Information Science, 2008) Prajuli, RameshEntitle BOOLEAN OPERATOR IN LOGICAL AND EFFICIENT INFORMATIONRETRIEVAL database searching and Web searching became the most popular activitieson the local and remote login, information retrieval (IR), which was performed mainly byprofessionals, researchers, now is an activity that every user on the Web is engaged in.The growing interest in general user's database searching and Web searching abilitynaturally leads to the awareness that some kind of guidance is needed. Since IR on thedatabase or Web has many similarities with traditional IR, IR skills of retrievinginformation have been adopted to teach general users how-to search or about retrievinginformation from the Web. Two major concerns regarding users’ behavior are frequentlyfound: the queries tend to be short, and Boolean operators are insufficiently used instructuring queries.Drawing on the social informatics view of IR and the semantic Web research, this thesisfirst argues that short queries have unique values in database searching and Websearchingbecause OR and NOT operators shows grater effectiveness upto two keywordsamong the both user groups. It also argues that using Boolean operators is an effectivestrategy in database searching and Web searching. Because Web searching is generallymotivated by knowledge discovery purpose, high recall and precision is not as importantas it is in small databases, so database searching become more sophisticated with Booleanoperators. The study also discusses the tradeoffs between the benefits of operator usewith enhanced search interfaces and the time and effort that users need to exert to use thefeatures. The study mainly focuses the information seeking behavior of library professionals, M.Lib. Sc. Students, general users of university level, and researcher. Their behavior or skillmeasured with the help of questionnaires on the basis of their personal knowledge andexperience. Therefore BOOLEAN OPERATOR IN LOGICAL AND EFFICIENTINFORMATION RETRIEVAL study highlights the skills and abilities of potential andnovice users. For this study data has been collected from four main librariesviz: TUCL,ICIMOD, SSBL, and KUSOM their professionals and usershave taken as the source ofinformation. Total 24 questions were formulated to evaluating their skills of coordinatingthe keywords and their techniques of implementing Boolean logical operators forsuccessful query formulation. Total 63% and 48% of professionals and general usersrespectively were used Boolean operators while they navigating and it meets itshypothesis. In similar investigation total 65% professionals feel Boolean operators areuser friendly and rest 35% not feels so. Similarly only 41% general users feel it userfriendly whereas 59% general user not so.Five search tasks associated with TUCL onlinedatabase has been presented to fill-up in each questionnaire, only 115 respondents wereparticipated out of 150. The respondents so selected provided 115 172535 searchresults. After completion of search the output results as obtained by two broad usergroups were compared with the result as obtained by database expertise for the relevanceassessment. Total value obtained by two (2) broad user groups, professionals and generalusers to their five (5) titles, corresponding to three (3) Boolean operators i.e. total 30352 Chi-Square( 2 )test was used as the significance of the study.Conclusionand recommendations has been drawn on the basis of this analytical and exploratory study. It finally discusses the carryover of user's information behaviors across different kinds ofthe digitized library or automated library database or Web, and the effects of the strongcommercial forces which spur the need for sophisticated IR skills in shaping user'sinformation habits. It concludes that a different model based on the social cognitiontheories and practical is needed to approach general user's problems with informationretrieval on the database and Web. In the field of librarycomputers, telecommunication technologies are playing an important role. Theyfacilitate collection development, storage, organization, processing, analysis, presentationand dissemination of exact information or data provided for the information users.Libraries are in the business of information with their various functions such as storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. So information retrieval is considered as animportant issue. The problem towards, which this study is focused to find out the ITapplications in cataloguing and indexing in information centers. The objective of thisstudy is to findout the existing conditions of IT application in cataloguing and indexingin informationcentersor libraries. It aims tofind out the user-friendliness in cataloguingwhile retrievingthe informationafter the use of IT in catalogue and index on the basis ofusing Thesaurus, Subject heading list and Authority list; to examine the informationretrieval facility on the basis of applicationof ITin cataloguing and indexing.Application of IT in information centers has great importance for fast, easy and accurateinformation retrievals for scholars, students, researchers and academics. There arevarious software which can be used in information centers or libraries. Most of thelibraries or informationcenters are usingsoftwaresuch as SOUL, CDS/ISIS,WINISIS,MINISI, KOHA, ALICE, MIDAS, LIB-INFO, etc. In Nepal, information centers orlibraries are using CDS/ISIS, LIB-INFO, SOUL, and MIDAS as main software.SOUL isbeing usedinKUSOMLwhereas CDS/ISIS is beingused inTUCL, ICIMODand SSBLfor its bibliographic database for information retrieval. The information centers areproviding online services as online database: EBSCO Host, JSTOR, DELNET, AGORA,etc for information retrieval in the libraries. Online journal database is mostly used inlibraries or information centers. TheApplication of IT in Nepalese libraries: TUCL,KUSOML, ICIMODL andSSBL have also been described.Application of IT in Cataloguing and indexing are the gateway for information retrieval.Computerized catalogue and index in information centers makefast and easy access forinformation retrieval. Most of the information centers or libraries in Nepal havebeenusingITapplicationas automated cataloguing and indexingsince 15 years ago. Both theAACR-IandAACR-II cataloguing codesare beingused in the libraries and informationcenters. In computerized cataloguing and indexing most informationusersprefer tousesubject heading than author and the titleheadings for information retrieval. They feelusing more than two key words in better way for information retrieval.Information usersare more satisfied with the automated indexing than automatedcataloguing though theyare friendlywith the both applications.Chi-sqaure test have beenapplied to prove thehypothesis that the librariesare providingeffective services with the new technology thatcanhelp improvein thelibrarian'simage;that large number of users and library professional are satisfied by using advance IT toolsfor information retrieval. The research study focusesboth the information users and library professionalswho useIT in cataloguing & indexingfor information retrieval.Ithasalso tryto find userfriendlytools of information retrieval.Data and information presented in this studywas collectedthrough personal interview with the users and library professional of the libraries inKathmandu and responses to questionnaires given to the users and library professional ofthe TUCL, KUSOML, ICIMODL and SSBL Libraries. Two set of questionnaire wasprepared, one for the libraryprofessional and other for the information users. About 110questionnaires were distributed, however only 100 questionnaires were returned.Combining the two set of questionnaire it compresses of 35 questions. Among therespondents 84% respondents have beenfound satisfiedwithusing advance IT tools forinformation retrieval. That information found from the sample taken from the abovepopulation areahas tried to know the knowledgefriendlinessabout the applicationof ITin catalogue & index on the library collection for information retrieval. Onlinebibliographic database or computerized database is more demanding and useful form ofcatalogue & index. Finally the research study recommends to qualified or well trainedlibrary staff and professional for the better image of library. One should be careful andconscious inapplying thenewadvance IT, so that all the related information retrieveseasily with accuracy. Mr. Ram Prasad Sharma CDLIS, T.U., KirtipurItem Digital Libraries in Nepal: Relevance of Digital Contents for Users and Technological Competence of the Librarians(Central Department of Library and Information Science, 2008) Gautam, Bishwa RajThe thesis "DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN NEPAL: RELEVANCE OF DIGITAL CONTENTS FOR USERS AND TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETENCE OF THE LIBRARIANS" in general focuses on the current scenario of digital libraries of Nepal specifically in the areas of contents and technology. The inefficiency of traditional library system to cope with mounting pressure of users and their limited time to find out relevant and updated informational resources such as geographical, scientific, economical content. Traditional libraries can not protect the deterioration of valuable informational materials which are frustratingly growing in rapid speed. To solve these all problems a new form of library is emerged. It is digital library. Digital library system is believed to be a panacea to all these problems as granted. But to find out the efficiency of digital library, relevance of content and the technological competence of the librarians this study is carried out. So that the entire field of LIS would get insights for further avenues. Its objectives are firstly to find out whether the digital contents in digital library are enough and relevant for the users secondly to find out whether the targeted users' needs are duly quenched or not thirdly to find out the competence of the librarian to handle the modern technological devices and their operations in digital library environment, fourthly to compare and contrast the scenario of digital content and technological competence of selected libraries and lastly to provide recommendations, based upon findings, to improve the situation of content and technological competence for the digital library system This study has focused on the aspects of relevance of digital contents housed in or served through the digital library and competence of the librarians to operate technological infrastructure used in their respective library. Four digital libraries British Council Learning Center Library (BCLCL), International Center for Integrated Mountain Development Library (ICIMODL), Mountain Forum Secretariat Library and Tribhuvan University Central Library (TUCL) have been selected. For technological competence of the librarian, eight libraries i.e. including the mentioned above and Kathmandu Medical College Library (KMCL), Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP), National Judicial Academy Library (NJAL), Social Science Baha Library (SSBL) have been purposively selected; however, the respondents were on-the-available basis. The sample population is comprised of 86 respondents. Among them 60 are digital library users but later 10 users from each library were randomly selected to make the research more uniform and comparable and 9 librarians who are responsible for decision making have been included for the evaluation of digital contents and 17 librarians have been included for their level of technological competence. The researcher has used a set of questionnaire, informal interview, and observation as his basic instruments of research. The questionnaire had 3 parts including a cover letter clarifying about the task. Part I was to be filled up with personal information of the respondent. Part II consisted of real questions. Part II '1' consisted of questions to be filled up by the actual users of the digital library on the relevance of contents. Part II '2' had questions to be filled up by the librarians about the contents, their scope and policy to acquire the contents etc. Part II '3' was for the persons who indeed were related to operate the technological devices to build digital library and it had questions to reveal the abilities of librarian to operate the infrastructure used in their respective library. The major findings of the study show the information being served by digital libraries is relevant to the target-users and the librarians are competent to handle daily chores of digital library system. Moreover, academically 59% librarians have received degree (Bachelor or above) in library and information science, but 11% have received degree in computer science, 30% have been providing service though they are from other than library and information science and computer science. All the librarians are abreast of the new technology with that what is implanted in their digital library. Most of them have received in-service/ refresher course. However the digital libraries and librarians are facing many hardships such as educational, economical, societal, technological etc. some of the difficulties are handling hardware / software. Various natures of database, digital materials, key words assigning, value-added information assigning, etc. also made their job difficult. Almost all the librarians have replied they have tried their best to solve the encountered problem, they (55%) have received training and 45% have hired experts pertinent to the problems but contradictorily 65% of them are unable to do hardware related tasks. This is because librarians (47%) did not have to do hardware related tasks most of them (14%) have lacked training. All the librarians are able to update their digital libraries. Most of the librarians (82.5) are basically involved in content downloading and updating their digital library. 57.5% of the weight is given that the librarians believe monetary factor is the main which has a significant role in the digital library development. Because money is being lacked to buy digital library infrastructure and to train the librarians. Where as 37.5% weight is given that money is only means. Therefore the gap in technology, low level of competence of librarian, culture to stick in traditional library system are responsible for the digital library system to be paralyzed. For sound development of digital library system full-text and abstracts service should be made strong, ensuring the access of historical knowledge. Digitization should be prioritized to make them available in digital form. Training, workshops, refresher course should be organized. All the digital libraries should recruit professional librarian who have received bachelor degree or above in LIS. Every library should encourage digital library project/section economically, institutionally and morally and user education should be imparted. Bishwa Raj GautamItem Library and Information Professionalism:Itsstatusin Nepal(Department of Library and Information Science, 2009) Acharya, Durga PrasadThethesis"Library and informationprofessionalism: its statusin Nepal"is carried outto examine the current status and scenario of the library and information professionalsin Nepal. Many LIS personalities who are still continuing their career in this field cannot proudly advocate on LIS profession. Because socially LIS profession is lesscounted and young. We often talk about LIS profession as a least developed andpracticed profession due to various reasons. The main reason is thepoorstudy cultureamong Nepalese. The study has three objectives. The first is to find the exact status ofthe professionals, second is to find out the promoting and hindering factors in thisprofession in Nepalese settingand third is to provide recommendations for furtheravenues in LIS professionalism. This studyis carried out focusing the professionalism aspect in various libraries. Thesubject libraries are selected purposively to in order to know various aspects andproblems of the professionals. The focused libraries are Tribhuvan University CentralLibrary, Kathmandu University Central Library, Nepal National Library, KaiserLibrary, Parliament Secretariat Library, Society for Kathmandu Valley PublicLibrary, andSocial Science Baha. The researcher has primarily used questionnaire as his main tool to collect data. Intotal 25 questions were asked to 31 respondents. The major findings show that,on the basis of the study,Library and InformationProfessionalism is an aspiring profession in Nepal. It has notyet been developed as afull profession like medicine, engineering, and law.The other findings areOut of totalthe 20% human resource has worked in the field without training or academicqualification. The largest no (36.66%) of human resource have got level III training inLIS, 23.33% human resource have got Master’s and 20% human resource have gotbachelor’s degree in LIS. All the human resources are full time staff in the field ofLIS. It is good for profession.50% of the respondents have served in LIS profession for below 5 years, 26.66% ofrespondents have served in LIS profession for 5 to 10 years, 3.33%of the respondentshave served in LIS profession for 11 to 15 years, 6.66% of the respondents haveserved in LIS profession for 16 to 20 years and 13.34% of the respondents haveserved in LIS profession for above 20 years.80%of the respondents work only for one place, butrests of the 20% workers are alsobusy inservingdifferent places except their regular (full time) joband23.33% of the v professional workers are also joined in other job, not related to LIS. They work inother places. In order to develop LIS as a healthyprofessionTraining and education shouldbeprovided for library workers who have received neither training nor education on LIS.Library workers should be competent at their respective responsibilities. Libraryprofessional should think about service not about on their individual interest. EveryLIS workers should be associated with the professional association. Marketing of LISprofession, services and man power should be promoted. Traditional working styleshould be replaced with modern ones. Professional culture should be developed. There should be legal provision about library and Information service. There shouldbe mutual cooperation among various professional organizations as well asprofessionals themselves. As many libraries as possible should be started with anefficient librarian in various educational institutes, I/NGOs for example one villageone library.Item Free and open Source Softwareforlibrariesissues and Problems in Nepal(Department of Library and Information Science, 2010) Thapa, PawanThe thesis entitled “Free andOpenSourceSoftwareforLibraries:IssuesandProblems inNepal” has been carried out with an objective to investigate issues and problemsregarding the use of free and open source software (FOSS) for libraries in Nepal.Different national and international literature has been reviewed during the study.Focusof the study ison the libraries in Nepal regarding the use of FOSS.The study has beenconducted inside the Kathmandu Valley with a sample of 9 libraries taken purposivelyusing non-probability sampling method. The study is chiefly based on primary data usingquestionnaire with few secondary data. The collected data have been presented andanalyzed usingfrequency distribution tables and pie-charts with their detail interpretation. The study reveals that most of the libraries (88.89%) use library specific software forautomating the library services and they (66.67%) do have staff with ITknowledge. Moreover, more than half of the libraries (55.56%) also use library specific FOSS.However, more than half of the libraries (55.56%) have never purchased any software andstill majority of them (77.78%) are not in a position to purchase any software needed forthe automation, so, the use of FOSS couldbe a viable solution to them. Furthermore, majority of libraries (66.67%) have heard about the FOSS licensing but only few(22.22%) have complete knowledge about it. Majority of libraries (55.56%)think that thecost of implementation of FOSS is very nominal compared to other proprietary software.More than half of the libraries (55.56%) have knowledge about the FOSS developed forlibrary operations. This shows the positive inclination of libraries towards the use ofFOSS but still there is a need to initiate different ways to make them informed regardingthe FOSS. Also, the perception regarding the FOSS can be considered satisfactorybecause most of the libraries (66.67%) believe customizability while some (22.22%)believe cost savings as the main benefits of using FOSS. Majority of the libraries(44.45%) believe lack of technical human resources as the main barrier in using FOSS inlibraries of Nepal while some (33.33%) opt for the lack ofawareness/information aboutFOSS. Thus, availability of technical human resources along with increasingawareness/information about FOSS should bedoneat the earliest to make thelibraries ofNepaluse FOSS.Item Science and Technology Documentation Centers: Status and Services(Central Department of Library and Information Science, 2011) Devi, SitaThis thesis entitled "Science and Technology Documentation Centers: Status and Services" has been carried out to fulfill the partial requirements for the degree of Master in Library and Information Science. The existing status of the three documentation centers has been taken as the problem of this thesis. The objectives of this thesis are to find out the status of the documentation centers, compare the services rendered by these documentation centers and to find out the users' satisfaction. This study includes collections, service, physical facilities, services, budget of these documentation centers. Related literature has been reviewed in chapter two. The focus of this dissertation has been limited to three science and technology documentation centers, namely Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, Nepal Agricultural Research Council and Ministry of Environment documentation centers in chapter three. A simple random sampling method has been employed for sampling purpose. Two sets of questionnaires, for the users and the library staffs, have been used for the collection of data. A survey has been carried out on these documentation centers to explore their status, and services. The time period of this study is from December 2010 to January 2011. A total of 59 questionnaires have been distributed among the users of the documentation centers. 51 questionnaires have been returned by the library users. Additionally, 6 questionnaires have been returned by the library staffs. The information obtained has been tabulated, presented and analyzed in chapter five by means of tabulation, pie chart, and diagram. The greatest numbers of the visitors are the researchers who go to these documentation centers. The most frequently collections which have been used are journals/ periodicals followed by magazines/newsletters. The collections in these documentation centers are 'fairly adequate' as it has been reported by 30% respondents. The two conventional services the largest numbers of respondents (29%) have used are the display of new books followed by abstracting and indexing (19%) and subject and bibliography (13%). The two methods which have been used to locate the information are by self-search (37%) and with the help of staff (42%). The two modern services which have been used by the higher percentages of the users are internet and database in interrelated subjects. Almost half of the total respondents (37%) are not satisfied with these documentation centers as these documentation centers do not have adequate library tools. The needs of the largest number of users are not met by the collection in all documentation centers. Majority of respondents (86%) have replied that the library staffs are helpful. The summary, findings and recommendations have been presented in chapter six. The precise status of these documentation centers differs. They all are related to science, technology and agriculture. They follow the same classification scheme, i.e. DDC. Document loan is provided only to the members of the parent organizations. The documentation centers spend some amount of budget for the management of the documentation centers. Taking into consideration several factors such as budget, management, manpower, users' satisfaction, NAST documentation center is best among these documentation centers. Above all, researchers' needs are not met by these documentation centers. Recruitment of professional manpower and subscription of international journals and databases are major recommendations suggested for the effective delivery of library services. Sita Devi
