Abstract
This research work entitled Strategies Used in Teaching and Learning
Listening is an attempt to investigate and analyze teachers’ and learners'
strategies in teaching and learning listening lessons. It is both quantitive and
qualitative inquiry, based on multi-method approach, descriptive and narrative
analysis of the data. I collected data from 10 secondary schools of Tanahun
district by using questionnaire for 40 students and 10 teachers. Three classes of
each teacher were observed by using observation checklist. The findings of this
research show that majority of the teachers taught listening lesson in the
classroom. The teachers, who taught listening, did not use proper strategies
while teaching listening lessons. The teaching listening strategies such as
question answer activities, written exercises relevant to the topics and
following instruction for the while listening activities were not found in the
teaching listening classroom. The teachers used cassette player twice more, discussion about the situation before listening, asked their students to listen,
summarized lesson, focused on important elements, giving background
information and encouraged practice after teaching listening lessons. The
students had faced problems in learning listening due to background knowledge
and problems in materials. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter provides theoretical input
for strategies used in teaching and learning listening, review of related
literature, significance of the study and objectives. Similarly, the second
chapter deals with the research methodology adopted for the study in which the
sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, processes of
data collection and limitations of the study are included. Likewise, the third
chapter deals with descriptive and quantitive analysis of the collected data.
These are based on questionnaire for students and teacher, and classroom
observation of teachers. The fourth chapter deals with the research findings and
recommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data. This
chapter is followed by reference and appendices.
