dc.description.abstract | This thesis entitled “The Forms of Request in English and Gurung Language” is a comparative study. It explores how the native speakers these languages make choice of the forms of requests. I used both primary and secondary sources of data. The sample population of the study consisted of 26 native speakers of Gurung including both males and females. I used stratified random sampling procedure to sample the population. The interview schedule and written questionnaire were the research tools for the data collection. On the basis of the collected data, the analysis and interpretation were done descriptively and comparatively with the help of tables, charts, diagrams and illustrations. The finding showed that the Gurung native speakers were less polite than their counterparts of English in relation to the terminologies used. The study has been presented in four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation, and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter deals with introduction which consists of general background, the English language in Nepal, the languages of Nepal, the Gurung language, language functions, the request forms in English and Gurung languages, importance of requesting in language, different views on politeness, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and the definitions of the specific terms. The second chapter deals with methodology adopted for the study. It consists of sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. It consists of request forms in the Gurung language with illustrations and comparison with those of English. The fourth chapter deals with the findings derived form the analysis and interpretation of data. It also consists of Recommendations to the teachers, students and the other concerned authorities. The final section of the thesis consists of the references and appendixes. | en_US |
