Abstract
This research entitled The Effectiveness of Flashcards in Teaching Content Words is an attempt to find out the effectiveness of flashcards in teaching content words at higher secondary level students. The research study was carried out mostly using primary sources of data. After the study and analysis of the data, it was found that majority of the students showed a long lasting memory power and quick retrieval of the vocabulary items along with their meaning, spelling, pronunciation, and their use. It was also found that the students who were taught the same number and size of vocabulary items without using flashcards lagged far behind to retrieve the items, not to talk about other aspects. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter of the study deals with the general background, the English language teaching in Nepal, introduction to the vocabulary, various strategies of teaching vocabulary items, the techniques of preparing and using flashcards in the classrooms. Similarly this chapter also includes the literature review, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology used in data collection for the study i.e. the sources of data, sample population, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, and data collection procedures. The third chapter is the analysis and interpretation of data, which is the main part of the study. The last chapter encompasses the findings and recommendations followed by references and appendices.
