Abstract
Thisdissertation is essentially a field research exclusively based onprimary data directly collected by the researcher himself. The research isbasically descriptive innature based on the intuitive interpretation ofdifferent kinesic features by the native speakers of the Maithili andEnglish languages. The research attempts to compare and contrast the Maithili andEnglish Kinesics in terms of the three components: (i)Facial appearance,(ii) Head and Hand Posture and (iii) Body Posture. It contains mainlythree types of materials (i) a set of photographs exhibiting different typesof kinesicfeatures, (ii) the data collected on these photographs from thenative speakers of the Maithili and English languages and (iii) theanalysis and interpretation of these data. Some of the principal findingsare as follows: – In most cases a single kinesicfeature expresses different meaningsin Maithili and English Languages. – In some cases a single kinesic feature expresses similar meaningsin Maithili and English languages. – In a few cases a single kinesic feature expresses the same meaningin Maithili and English languages. – These findings show that in general kinesic features are cultureand/or language specific. This thesis consists of four chapters as follows:Chapter one contains a brief introductory survey of the related areaof the study followed by literature review, objectives and finallysignificance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology followed in the research.It is presented in terms ofsources of data, sampling procedures, researchtool, procedure of data collection and limitation of the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the dataelicited using photos, pie charts and tables. The statistical tools of simplepercentage and average are used to analyze and interpret the dataquantitatively. Chapter four includes findings and recommendations of theresearch.
