Abstract

This thesis entitled Pluralization of Nouns in English and Angika: A Comparative Study tries to indentify and compare the pluralization process of nouns in English and Angika. In order to carry out this research, 60 native speakers of Angika from three different districts viz. Morang, Sunsari and Saptari were selected as respondents. Purposive non- random sampling procedure was used for selection of respondents. Interview schedule were employed to collect data. On the basis of the collected data, comparison between English and Angika was done using descriptive tools. The major finding of the study showed that English pluralization process of nouns is nearly close to the pluralization nouns in Angika. But in some cases, such as pluralization of English needs to add central and regular suffixes ‘-s, es, ies’ where as Angika nouns need ‘-sab/ãru’. No material noun is pluralized in English but some material nouns such as ‘sonã, chãndi, dhãn’ have their plural form ‘sonãsab, chãndisab, dhãnsab’ respectively in Angika. Regarding the compound nouns in English, the principle words are pluralized but only last words are pluralized in Angika. In Angika, pluralization of noun in subjective case does not affect the verb; it needs to pluralize both noun and verb in English. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first is ‘Introduction’ which contains background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definition of the key terms. The second chapter is ‘Review of Related Literature and Conceptual Framework of the Study’ which includes review of theoretical literature, review of the empirical literature, implication of the review for the study and conceptual framework of the study. The third chapter ‘Methods and Procedure of the Study’ contains design and method of the study, population sample and sampling strategy, study area, data collection tools and techniques, data analysis and interpretation procedure. The fourth chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of results. The fifth chapter contains recommendations. In the final section of the study, references and appendices are included.
