Abstract
The study entitled “the lifeworld of the Chamar community in
Sakhuwaparsauni RM-6 Mahuwan, Parsa District, Nepal”. The Chamar
community, primarily situated in the Terai region, represents one of Nepal's
indigenous groups and is known for their traditional leather working occupation.
The aims to achieve three key objectives: to assess the socio-economic status of
the Chamar community, to assess traditional occupation practices among the
Chamars, and to analyse the diversification of their livelihoods.
Both primary and secondary data sources were used. The sample was chosen
through random sampling was used to select study participants of this study, the
tool developed in household surveys using structured questionnaires, field
observations, and key informant interviews. Data were analyzed by using
descriptive statistics using SPSS version 22 and findings were presented in a
tables.
Key findings from the study reveal that the Chamar community faces significant
socio-economic challenges, including low educational attainment, landlessness,
and limited participation in community activities. Traditional livelihood practices,
such as leather working, have transformed due to various factors, with many
community members transitioning away from these occupations. The data also
highlights the community's dedication to preserving their cultural heritage through
participation in cultural rituals and community-based initiatives. Moreover, it
underscores the complexities of caste discrimination and its impact on the Chamar
community's traditional livelihood practices.
In conclusion, the study provides a nuanced understanding of the Chamar
community's challenges and opportunities, offering valuable insights for
policymakers and researchers working toward their empowerment and socioeconomic
development
in
Nepal.
