To fulfill these objectives, I used both primary and secondary sources of data. I conducted an orientation class for two days (i.e., two periods) and collected the required data from B.B. memorial English Secondary School Class Eight as the primary source of data. I selected 30 students by administering a proficiency pre test. After that the students were ranked from the first position to the 30th position on the basis of the result of the proficiency pre test. Then the students with odd-numbered positions were grouped under Treatment Group and those with even-numbered positions were grouped under Controlled Group. Thus, the two groups, each comprising 15 students, were formed attempting best to maintain homogeneity in proficiency. I taught each group 20 periods and every period I gave a class test to both groups Comprehension was assumed to be reflected on the four 'components of comprehension', namely, objective question answers, short answers, description writing and summary writing-all text-based. The pre and post questions were designed with this assumption in mind. I used the pre-questions for Treatment Group but I did not use them for Controlled Group. I collected all answer papers and scored them out. As the secondary sources I used different books and journals which were already collected and prepared by other writers, resources, organizations. They mainly include books in the field of ELT by nationally and internationally recognized authors, Lower Secondary English Curriculum, English Language Teaching training manual etc. The collected raw data were minutely analyzed using the simple statistical tools sketches, percentage, mean etc. I found that the use of pre-questions was effective in teaching reading texts for comprehension. This study consists of four chapters: introduction, methodology, analysis and interpretation and findings and recommendations. The first chapter (introduction) deals with the general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter introduces methodology, which consists of sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure¸ tools of data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. The third chapter (analysis and interpretation) includes the raw data and its analysis using tables, charts, diagrams etc. The fourth chapter deals with findings and recommendations of the study.Item English Language Teachers' Perceptions Towards Professionalism(Department of English Education, 2013) Baral, GyanuThe thesis entitled 'English Language Teachers' Perceptions Towards Professionalism' was an attempt to explore various beliefs of English language teachers about English, learners, learning, teaching and the teachers themselves. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used in this study. For primary sources of data, ten secondary level English teachers were purposively selected from Ilam district as the sample and they were interviewed using an interview schedule and then a set of questionnaire was distributed to them to explore their beliefs. Then, the data collected were analyzed and interpreted descriptively. After the analysis, it was found that a majority of the teachers believed that English is an important language and learning is an interactive process for which learners need to be motivated, enthusiastic and need sufficient amount of exposure to learning. They further believed that for effective learning and teaching English learners' linguistic and cultural background should be taken into consideration. Moreover, they did not believe that learning and teaching English should not be confined only to school. They also believed that English learning and teaching should not be based on from-focused instruction, rather guided by the principles of communicative methodology. Finally, they believed that English teachers needed to possess a good command of the English language in terms of fluency, accuracy and appropriacy. This study consists of four chapters and other sub-chapters. The first introductory chapter consists of the general backgrounds, review of the related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology which comprises sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools and process of data collection and limitations of the study. Likewise, the third chapter is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of the data collected from the primary sources which were conducted using tables, percentage and mean. The last chapter incorporates the findings and the recommendations made after the data analysis which is followed by references and appendices.Item Listening Proficiency of Eleventh Graders(Department of English Education, 2013) Adhikari, Dev RajThe present thesis entitled' Listening Proficiency of the Eleventh Graders is a study to find out and compare the listening comprehension proficiency of the students of Higher secondary level in Taplejung district on the basis of the variables; sector, public and private and sex; boys and girls in different test items used in the course of data collection. This is both quantitative and qualitative inquiry, based on multi- method approach, descriptive and narrative analysis of data. The main tools for the data collection were questionnaire and observation. The data were collected from 12 English teachers teaching at Basic Level Schools of Sunsari district by using questionnaire. Further the teachers' classes were observed using the observation checklist. The findings of the study showed that most of the teachers were found academically qualified to teach at Basic level. No teachers used single technique to warm up the students. They used various techniques such as asking pre-reading questions related to the coming topic, starting with vocabulary race, asking questions related to the topic, doing pair work related to the topic, providing hints about the lesson, telling reference, by visualization of theme of content. Most of the respondents preferred student-centered techniques while teaching English for Basic level students which indicates that teachers are moving away from traditional teaching methods, where the teacher takes center stage and controls the learning process, to more modern approaches, where students play an active role in their own learning. Various techniques were used by teachers to teach reading skill at Basic level such as reading aloud, story map, scanning and skimming, reading in front of the class, summarizing and visualizing the background, answering the questions, clarifying, structure proposition, chart, recitation etc. Out of them reading aloud technique was mostly used technique and scanning and skimming technique were occasionally used techniques. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, and significance of the study and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of related theoretical literature, review of related literature and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with research design, sources of data, population and sample, sampling procedure, data collection tools, data collection procedure and method of analysis of data. Chapter four deals with the analysis and interpretation of data, while chapter five focuses on the conclusion and recommendations and implications.
