Item Analysis of English Textbook of Grade Ten(Department of English Education, 2021) Kattel, MilanThe main objectives of this research study were to analyze the textbook in terms of its physical and academic aspects of the grade ten Compulsory English being based on different parameters and criteria purposed by Harmer (2008) and Ur (2009)for evaluating the textbook to find out its strengths and weaknesses. This study was adopted survey research design. Thirty different secondary level English teachers from community and institutional were selected from Ilam district as the sample population of the study. The teacher respondents were chosen through convenience sampling procedure. The interview served as main tool of data collection. The collected data they were analyzed and interpreted using thematic approach. This thesis consists of five different chapters along with the references and appendices at the end. Each chapter is divided into necessary heading and subheadings. The first chapter deals with the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study, delimitations of the study,and operational definitions of the key terms. Similarly, the second chapter incorporates the review of related theoretical literature, review of the empirical literature, implications of the review on the study, and conceptual framework.Likewise, the third chapter includes the design and methods of the study, research tool sample population, and sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The fourth chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of data. And the last fifth chapter presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations. This research is concluded with references and appendices. The findings of this study showed that text book helps student to understand in better way and it covers all aspects as well as skills of language. The study provide insights to the EFL teachers, teacher educators, policy makers, curriculum developers, syllabus designers in formulating right kinds of planning and policies in the field of English Language Teaching in Nepal.Item Challenges in Managing Mixed Ability Students in ELT Classes(Department of English Education, 2018) Lama, SaritaThe present study entitled ‘Challenges in Managing Mixed Ability Students in ELT Classes’is an attempt to identify the challenges of managing mixed ability students in ELT classes faced by secondary level ELT teachers and to explore the ways of managing mixed ability students in ELT classes.The data were collected from the 30 secondary level English language teachers working in private schools of Lalitpur district. The samples were selected using non-random purposive sampling procedure. Questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection in this study.The collected data were analyzed descriptively and statistically. The findings of the study showed that dealing with the weak students and homework;controlling students’ different behaviour; learners’disinterest and discipline problems;correcting dailyassignments;devisingdifferent techniques, tasks and materials for the learners;teachers’ negative attitudes towards learners;students’ different language levels, backgrounds and intelligences were found to be the major challenges faced by the secondary level ELT teachers while managing mixed ability students in ELT classes.Similarly, conducting pair work and group work; giving more focus on weakstudents; teaching through project work and collaboration;providing open-ended exercises to the students;making the classroom interesting; encouraging bright to help the weak in the class were found as the good ways of managing mixed ability students in ELT classes. Likewise,textbook was not found as a best tool to deal with the mixed ability students in ELT classes.In the same way,almost all the teachers took their mixed ability classes as an opportunity. This thesis is organized into five chapters. The first chapter deals with the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study,research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Finally, the fifth chapter includes conclusions and policy related, practice related and further research related recommendations.Item Challenges of Teaching Novel at Higher Secondary Level(Department of English Education, 2015) Singh Aidi, PradeepThe present thesis entitled "Challenges of Teaching Novel at Higher Secondary Level" is carried out to find out the challenges of teaching novel at higher secondary level. The researcher selected twenty English teachers teaching major English at higher secondary level and twenty students studying major English at the same level from ten different higher secondary schools of Kathmandu district through simple random sampling procedure.A set of questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection. The data obtained was analyzed descriptively and interpreted using simple statistical tools.After the analysis and interpretation of collected data, it was found that the students faced a lot of challenges such as understanding about the cultural background of the novel, predicting about the story of the novel by looking at the title,understanding the plot, character, setting and language of the novel, and understanding the unfamiliar words and phrases used in the novel while learning novel in the classroom.Moreover, it was also found that, majority of the teachers faced a lot of challenges,such as length of the novel and time management, culture, setting, context and language used in the novel,interpreting the novel due to the students' poor academic background,proceeding three stages viz. pre, while and post reading activities. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is an introductory part. This chapter includes general background of the topic, statement of the problem,objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study,delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Chapter two consists of review of the related theoretical and empirical literature,conceptual framework and implications of the study. Similarly, third chapter is methodology. This chapter incorporates design and method of the study,population, sample and sampling strategy, tools and techniques, data collection procedures and analysis and interpretation procedures. Likewise, chapter four consists of analysis and interpretation of results and summary of findings.Finally, the last chapter deals with conclusions and recommendations of the study.Item Role of Parents Towards Their Children's English Language Learning(Department of English Education, 2015) Pant, Laxmi RajThe present thesis entitled Role of Parents Towards English Language Learning was carried out to find out the role of parents in English language learning and to identify the attitudes of parents towards their role in English language learning. For this, the researcher selected 45 parents from New Baneshwor, by using purposive sampling procedure,Kathmandu. A set of questionnaire was prepared for information. A questionnaire with different questions related to the role of parents was supplied to the parents. The findings of the study showed that those parents who mostly used roles of facilitator, motivator, threatener, feedback provider have positive attitudes towards English language learning and those parents who used controller roles have negative attitudes towards English language learning. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introductory chapter which includes general background of study, statement of the problem, rationale of the study, objectives of the study, research questions,significance of the study and delimitations of the study. The second chapter includes the review of the related literature and conceptual framework. The third chapter covers all the area of methodology dealing with design of study, sampling procedures,tool and procedures of data collection. Fourth chapter includes data analysis and interpretation in which data were analyzed by using different tables, charts and figures. Similarly,the fifth chapter includes summary,conclusion and implication on policy level,practical level and for the further researchers. The references and appendices formed the final part of the thesis.Item A Study on Attitudes of Kumal Students towards Learning English(Department of English Education, 2017) Atreya, ShushmaThe present thesis entitledA Study on Attitude of Kumal Students towardsLearning English. The objectives of the research were to find out the Kumalstudents attitude towards learning English in terms of textbook, curriculum,teaching and learning situation. The tools of data collection were open-ended &closed–ended questionnaire. The research participants were taken fromsecondary level thirty Kumal students of different schools located in Palpadistrict. The process of selecting sample population was non-random purposivesampling procedure. The unit of analysis was the English language class. Theresult of my study suggests that 70 percent of Kumal students have positiveattitude towards English language learning. However, they showed negativeattitude towards the availability of teaching material and exposure. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with theintroduction, background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives ofthe study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of thestudy and operational definition of the key terms. Likewise, thirdchapter deals withmethods and procedures of the study,population, sample and samplingstrategy, data collection tools and techniques, data collection procedures anddata analysis and interpretation procedure.In the samevein,Chapter fourthcontainsanalysis and interpretations of results along with analysis of data andinterpretation of results and summary of findings.In the same wayfifth chapterincludes conclusions and recommendations in three different areas i.e. Policyrelated, practice related and further research related.Finally, the references andappendices are included.Item Teachers Perceptions on the Use of Summative Assessment at Secondary Level(Department of English Education, 2021) Sah, Kabita KumariThe thesis entitled “Teachers Perceptions on the use of summative assessment at secondary level” is an attempted to find out Teachers Perceptions on the use of summative assessment ELT Classrooms. I collected the data by administrating the questionnaire to 30 Teachers of different secondary school of Kathmandu district.Two types of Questionnaire (Closed-Ended, Open-Ended) were employed to elicit data. The sample of the study was selected through purposive non-random sampling procedure. The data where analyzed and interpreted in order to find out their perceptions of using summative assessment in ELT classroom, I conduct survey research to achieve the objective of the study. The major findings of the study show that summative assessment were used for teaching for providing the feedback to the students, to improve the teaching learning process. Most of the teachers used the summative assessment in the form of terminal examinations and final examinations project work in classroom at secondary level. Moreover, it was perceived that use of summative assessment beneficial to the students as well as teachers at secondary level in ELT classrooms may hinder learning of the students .it is recommended that regarding appropriate judicious use of summative assessment in classrooms This thesis consists of five chapters. Finally, the references and the appendices, which are necessary for the validation of the research, have also been presentedItem Techniques used by primary level english teachers to motivate students(Department of English Education, 2017) Paudel, SumanThe present research study entitled Techniques Used by Primary Level English Teachers to Motivate Students aimed to find out the techniques used by primary level English teachers to motivate students in ELT classroom. To meet the objectives of this study, I selected 30 primary level English teachers from 15 primary level schools of Kathmandu valley as sample using purposive non-random judge mental sampling procedure to select the sample for thisstudy. Questionnaire and classroom observation checklist were used to collectthe data for this study. The findings of this study showed that eye contact,calling students by their name, teachers’ movement in the whole class,checking and crossed checking students’ classroom behaviours, cracking jokes,playing games and singing songs and rhymes were the most used techniques tocreate motivation among primary level students. Similarly, speaking loudly and clearly and frequent walks around the classroom were the best techniques to motivate primary level students in course of teaching. The work attempted to find out the techniques of teaching grammar used by secondary level English teachers. For this purpose, a sample of the two English teachers was selected from two different secondary schools of Chitwan district by using non random purposive sampling. The data was collected in the form of narrative notes through the class observation. It was found that personal question, oral exercise, free sentence composition,lecture, isolation, writing,inductive method, deductive method were used by secondary level English teacher in teaching grammar in the classroom. This thesis is divided into five chapters,viz. introduction, review of related literature, methods and procedure of the study,result and discussion of the study and summary, conclusion and implications of the study. Finally,the fifth chapter includes the summary, conclusion and implication of the study.The fifth chapter is followed by references and appendices.Item Three Reading Phases Technique to Develop Reading Skills of Students Studying at Grade-IX: Action Research(Department of English Education, 2021) Dhakal, Nal RajThe present research entitled Three Reading Phases Technique to Develop Reading Skills of Students Studying at Grade-IX: Action Research was an attempt to ascertain the effect of three reading phases technique to develop reading skills and to provide pedagogical implications. I followed action research deign to carry out this study. Twenty two respondents were selected using purposive non random sampling procedure. The pre -test, the progress test and the post- test items and a set of rating response item tests were the main tools for data collection. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively and statistically. The major findings of study shows that three reading phases technique help the students develop reading skills of secondary level students to understand the structure and organization, enable to deduce meaning of unfamiliar phrases and words, understand the underlying themes ; learners have active roles to develop independent in the way of study, remember, store and use language participating in different activities of reading skills and it is suggested that English language teachers should implement this technique in the EFL classroom with different practicable reading activities and assessment process that enable learners to understand the ideas and knowledge from the reading texts.
