There is little possibility of deviation of such conceptual values. The novel revolves around a Romanian girl named Athena adopted by a rich Lebanese family. Her real name is Sherin Khali land she attempts to over come the patriarchal norms and values. The novel also emphasizes the nature of existence of women in the male dominated society through the lenses women. Eliza and Ann are able to exhibit their supremacy by choosing the male partners of their choice in spite of the adverse situation. The life force present in these makes the intellectuals like John Tanner and Professor Higgins take refugee in the asylum of their strength. The playwright, doubtless, has tried to offer some of the bold images of the women to counterbalance the traditional superiority of men and these attempts keep important meaning since Ann is able to shun the desperate Octavius and pull Tanner for better mating while Eliza hurls slipper at her own teacher and gets accompanied with Freddy Hill. This research paper aims to reveal the notion of the playwright that women always have greater roles in better evolutionary process and the males are just tools in this process. Shaw has presented the race of life force in both the plays and has also shown that the characters with more powerful life force have defeated the rest. The will power and self-determination, the by-products of life force, are such virtues through which the women can lead the world any time they wish.Item A critical discourse analysis of the novel Seto Dharti: Feminist perspective(Department of English Education, 2023) Rawal, ManjuThis study entitled A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Novel Seto Dharti: Feminist Perspective. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers(Department of English, 2010) Subedi, GaneshThe present thesis explores Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers from feminist perspective, where author’s projection of female agency is contradictory. On the one hand Lawrence shows the female characters quite active and decisive in controlling and regulating male members where as on the other hand he is constantly projecting them with negative stereotypes such as being very seductive, cocky, selfish, opportunist. Like Mrs. Morel keeps her sons within her control and make them move around her commands and desires. Clara substitutes her husband and lover time and again when she thinks in need. Moreover, female agency is shown only in the absence of male agency that is either male can’t act actively or are irresponsible. Therefore, this projection of female agency in the novel is used not only to continue the patriarchal ideology but also to reinforce more powerfully the negative stereotypes of women.Item Feminist perspective in the novel Yogmaya(Department of English Education, 2021) Thapa, Shree MayaThis is a study on Feminist Perspective in the Novel Yogmaya. The ‘Yogmaya’ is a novel written by Neelam Karki Niharika which was published in 2074 B. S. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze feminist issues in terms of gender discrimination, women’s position in society, inequality, patriarchy, gender roles, and political and social factors in the novel Yogmaya. Gender discrimination depicts how society and its people make discriminatory behavior and domination to single women. Depicting women’s position in society, when Ganga tries her husband, Agnidhar to understand equality between males and females of their own family, he furiously opposes her thoughts and ways of presentation. Similarly, showing inequality, men have the freedom to marry anyone of their interests regardless of whether they are already married or not, whereas women are even not permitted to speak with someone else except with their husbands or relatives. Likewise, in patriarchy, Yogmaya strongly presents herself to stop the tendency and freedom to marry more than one wife for men, while she also emphasizes the equal rights of women to marry anymore of their interests, when women are single, living as a widow or in critical marital relationship. Additionally, in gender roles, the women were burnt alive when their husbands die but husbands were not burnt in case of the early demise of their wives as mentioned in the fiction. Lastly, in political and social factors, females even cannot go against existing biasness due to the heavy influence of patriarchal ideologies in society. This study embodies forty-eight different extractions as samples to analyze and interpret the issues in feminism. The required data were collected using a purposive sampling strategy. As it is qualitative research, the study is completely based on secondary sources of data. The major findings of this study showed that females have been dominated and discriminated against in society due to social, cultural, traditional norms and values, religious beliefs, and ideology. Similarly, the household works that women do in the house are not valued in society. And likewise, women have to worship their husband as a God and serve him with great honor. In a patriarchal society, women are physically and emotionally abused by their husbands, his family, and by females themselves as well. The present study resides of five chapters along with a reference and appendix at the end. The first chapter deals with the background introduction of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions of the key terms. Similarly, the third chapter consists ofthe design of the study, sample and sampling strategy, sources of data, data collection tools and techniques, data collection procedures, and ethical considerations. Moreover, the fourth chapter is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of the data. As the Joad family starts its journey to California, there organization of the family becomes essential to their survival. In times of material loss, Ma Joad breaks with patriarchal rules, emerges as the new leader of her family, and plays more than the housewife role assigned to the women of her time. She becomes, then, an essential figure to the maintenance of the family’s integrity. The aim of this study is to analyze the way in which the determination of new social values, especially those regarding the role of women in the family, occur in the novel, taking into consideration the historical context of migration in which the narrative takes place. The main argument of my thesis will be the violation of traditional norms of Patriarchy and highly welcoming Matriarchy in Steinbeck’s work The Grapes of Wrath, though several critics have argued about this piece of art on the Marxist ground. The migratory movement to the west contributes to the ascertaining of new social values and to the establishment of new family roles. With Pa Joad’s loss of control over his family during the journey, Ma is capable of breaking with the patriarchal ideology to assume a more influential position in the family. This thesis endorses some previous studies on The Grapes of Wrath, and represents an opportunity for new studies on the novel.Item Quest for Female Self in Kathryn Hulme’s The Nun’s Story(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2012-08) Rai, Dhana MayaThis research explores the female’s quest for ‘Self ’ in Kathryn Hulme’s The Nun’s Story. The protagonist of the novel, Gabrielle Van der Mal, turns into a nun as Sister Luke. She has a strong desire to exit from nunnery life but her father and her superior, the priest always restrict her to worldly life and stand as barriers in her quest for self. They are the representatives of the patriarchy and patriarchal society creating the utmost obstacle for the females. Sister Luke is fed up and tired with society which does not allow her to make self decision and create her own self. But Sister Luke resists against the patriarchal rules for feminine freedom and successfully exit from nunnery life. She is victimized physically and mentally by the male characters and Holy-rules. Therefore, she leaves nunnery life forever in search for her inner self. Thus, Sister Luke (Gabrielle) represents the female agenda and tries to redraw the boundary of patriarchy prevalent in the society.
