Item Communication Strategies Used by English Teachers and Students(Faculty of English Education, 2010) Dangi, Pabitra KumariThis thesis entitled "Communication Strategies Used by the Lower Secondary Level English Teachers and Students" is an attempt to find out the types of and compare them. For this study, the researcher selected ninety six studnets and twelve teachers and thirty six classes were observed to collect the data. The researcher used a set of questionnaire and an observation check list in order to collect the required information from the selected students and teachers which were expected to meet the objectives of the study. The collected data from the informants were analyzed and interpreted to find out the communication strategies used by the teachers and the students and compared them using tables and simple statistical tools. It was found that they used different twenty five communication strategies while teaching and learning English. The most frequent communication strategy was asking for both the teachers and students. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Each chapter, in turn, is divided into sub-chapters. The first chapter introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted during the study. This chapter consists of sources of data, the sample population and sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of data. In this chapter data are analyzed and interpreted through statistical and descriptive approach. The fourth chapter presents findings which are derived from the analysis and interpretation of data. Finally, some recommendations are made on the basis of the findings of the study. The references and appendices are the concluding part of the research.Item Effectiveness of Active Learning Strategy for Developing Critical Thinking(Central department of English Education, 2011) Sah, Dipesh KumarThe present study entitled ‘The Effectiveness of Active Learning Strategies for developing Critical Thinking’ is an attempt to find out the techniques to develop critical thinking in reading skill. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate some active learning strategies for effective reading comprehension. For this purpose, I experimentally used three active learning strategies which were TPS (Think, Pair and Share) Approach, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) technique and Five Questions technique on the targeted group. Active learning strategies were taken as instructional activity involving students in doing things and thinking about what they are doing. A simple questions and answers format addressed to the issues of how to create more "active" classroom spaces and what barriers teachers should be aware of while teaching reading skill. The research was based on both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary data were collected through the tests (pre-test, progressive test, and post test) given to 32 students selected purposively. The major finding of the study showed that active learning strategies were effective in developing critical thinking. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology adopted for the study. It encompasses source of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three presents an analysis and interpretation of the data. In this chapter, data have been analyzed and interpreted through statistical and descriptive approach. Chapter four presents the findings derived from the analysis of the data. On the basis of the findings, some recommendations have been presented in the last chapterItem Learner Autonomy: A Case of M.Ed. Students(Department of English Education, 2010) Joshi, Khem RajThe renewedinterest of the last forty years in learner autonomy has added newtaste in the field of SLA. Since the term ‘Learner Autonomy’ entered the arenaof ELT in 1981; it has been watched so curiously by severalscholars andresearchers. Many studies have shown that autonomous learning is inevitable inthis era where humanistic trend in learning has become the day demand.Taking a mixed-methodological design, the current study aims to make asurvey of autonomouslearning activities of the subjects.Besides, it exploreswhat their perceptions are ofthe roles oftheir own andthat of theirteachersinlearning. The attempts have also been made to find out how it has beenwatched from the teachers’ view point, particularly as a part of theirexperience. For these purposes, a sample of 80 English major students and 6 oftheir teachers was selected from the Department of English Education,University Campus, T. U. Kirtipur. Analyzing the data collected through thelearner autonomy survey questionnaire and the semi-structured interview; it hasbeen found that the learners make good practice of autonomous activities. Theyundertake various plans and activities so as to learn and improve their Englishlanguage in learning. Moreover, they view their role as an important factor insuch learning; also take their teachers’ role equally important too. From theanalysis of the responses of the teachers, it has been found that autonomouslearning is very important for the learners. So, they have suggested the learnersto be autonomous. These all findings imply that the teachers and the learnersboth are highly positive towards autonomous learning. This work comprises of four chapters. Thefirst chapterpresents the generalbackground, definitions of learner autonomy, its brief history, the versions, theteacher and learner roles in such learning, and the factors that influence it.Further, the chapter deals with review of the related literature; the objectives ofthe study and thedefinitions of the specific terms used in the study. Thesecondchapteris about the methodology used in the process of this study. Namely, they are: sources of the data, population of the study, sampling procedure, theItem Learning Strategies Used by English Students at Intermediate Level(Faculty of Education Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Kathmandu, Nepal, 2010) Gautam, VijayaThe present study entitled “Learning strategies used by the students of higher secondary level” aimed to find out the learning strategies used by the students of higher secondary level while learning English language. The study was carried out by using both primary and secondary sources of data. She used a set of questionnaire as a tool for data collection. It is both quantitive and qualitative inquiry, based on multi-method approach, descriptive and narrative analysis of the data. I collected data from 10 secondary schools of Tanahun district by using questionnaire for 40 students and 10 teachers. Three classes of each teacher were observed by using observation checklist. The findings of this research show that majority of the teachers taught listening lesson in the classroom. The teachers, who taught listening, did not use proper strategies while teaching listening lessons. The teaching listening strategies such as question answer activities, written exercises relevant to the topics and following instruction for the while listening activities were not found in the teaching listening classroom. The teachers used cassette player twice more, discussion about the situation before listening, asked their students to listen, summarized lesson, focused on important elements, giving background information and encouraged practice after teaching listening lessons. The students had faced problems in learning listening due to background knowledge and problems in materials. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter provides theoretical input for strategies used in teaching and learning listening, review of related literature, significance of the study and objectives. Similarly, the second chapter deals with the research methodology adopted for the study in which the sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, processes of data collection and limitations of the study are included. Likewise, the third chapter deals with descriptive and quantitive analysis of the collected data. These are based on questionnaire for students and teacher, and classroom observation of teachers. The fourth chapter deals with the research findings and recommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data. This chapter is followed by reference and appendices.
