Item Content Validity of Question Papers of English for Mass media(Department of English Education, 2008) Shrestha, Hom KumarThe research entitled ‘Content Validity of Question Papers ofEnglish for Mass Media’ is an attempt to evaluate thequestion papers ofB.Ed. 3 rd year, from the years 2058 to 2062 prepared by the Controllerof Examination, T.U.The main objective of this research study was toexamine the content validity ofquestion papers ofEnglish for Mass Media.For thispurpose, theresearcher analyzedfiveyears’question papers from2058 to2062 of thesubject in question.Only secondary sources of datawere used in this study.Thequestion papers of English for Mass Media(From2058 to2062) administeredin T.U.exams werethemainsources ofinformation. The researcherused twoparameters:‘Coverage’ and ‘Weightage’.Test contents were compared with course contents in terms of coverage.Similarly, test contentsandweightage were compared with coursecontentsandweightage.After analyzing the question papers as a whole, it wasfoundthat thequestion papers ofEnglish for Mass Mediaof B.Ed. 3 yearshowhigh content validity in terms of coverage but low content validity interms of weightage. Thisstudyis divided intofourchapters. The first chapter dealswiththe introduction consisting of general background, language testing,different types of tests, characteristics of tests,review of related literature,objectivesand significanceof the study and definition of specificterms. Chapter two includes methodology, comprising sources of data,sampling process of data collection and limitationsofthe study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretationof the data. Itwasdonein terms of text wise coverage,anditemwiseanalysis of the testpapers. Chapter four deals with findingsand recommendationsof the study. rdItem Critique of Mass Media and Patriarchal Ideology in Anita Shreve’s The Pilot’s Wife(Department of English, 2012) Bantawa, ShobitaThis research is a study of Anita Shreve’s The Pilot’s Wife to examine the ideological functioning of the mass media and the critique of patriarchy. The novel depicts a plane crash and death of many passengers including its pilot Jack and its aftermaths. Kathryn, the wife of dead pilot, and her fifteen years old daughter Mattie do not believe in the media reports that term Jack as the responsible one for the crash. They are assaulted by media from everywhere and are more traumatized than the news of Jack’s death itself. Their social identity is ruined as they are regarded as the family of a murderer because the media had spread the rumor that Jack had taken an explosive bomb for the crash due to his suicidal purpose. This leads Kathryn to study about her husband that leads her to the discovery that his husband had hidden the fact that he had kept another wife beside her in London.Item A Descriptive Studyon Language Used in Cinema News in English Newspaper(Faculty of Education, 2008) Giri, KamalaThe present thesis entitled “A Descriptive Study on Language Used in CinemaNews in English Newspaper” aims to find out the use ofsentence type, tense,aspect, voice and narration inthreenewspapers viz.TheCity Post,The Timesof India andThe New York Times.The researcher appliedthe judgmentalsampling procedure to select these newspapers. The datahave beencollectedfromJune 15 to 31, 2008 i.e.45 issues of cinema news, 15 from each of thenewspapers.The study presents the descriptive analysis of the mentionedcharacteristicsofthelanguage used in cinema news.Itwasfound that therewas not significant difference among the language of TCP, TTI and TNYT.The general difference wasseen in itssimplicity.Complex sentences werefound maximally usedin all the newspaperscovering more than half i.e.53.53% of the total sentences.In all the newspapers,Non-past tenseandsimpleaspect wasused highly covering63.41%and85.38%respectively.Activevoiceandindirect narration werein majority in cinema news covering 93.42%and75.90%ofthe total sentencesrespectively. Thethesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introductory chapter. Itincludes general background,review of the related literature,objectives of thestudy,significance of the study anddefinition of the specific terms.Chaptertwodeals withthe methodology adopted to carry out the researchunder whichsources of data,sampling procedure,tools for data collection, process of datacollectionand limitations of the study are presented.Chapter threepresentsanalysis and interpretation of the data.In this section both statistical as well asdescriptiveapproach has been used.Chapter fourincorporatesfindingsandrecommendations of the research. The references and appendices form theconcluding part of the thesis.Item Discourse Analysis of Business Letters(Department of English Education, 2008) Bhandari, DeepakThe present research study entitled "Discourse Analysis of Business Letters" aims at finding out the moves and steps of business correspondence as well as politeness strategies used in business letters.From the analysis it is found that the use of politeness strategies wascommon in business letters. The three types of moves and steps werefound being used namely: establishing link, soliciting information andpromoting further contacts. Theentire thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapterdeals with the introduction part which mainlyconsist with thegeneralbackground, history of advertising, types of advertising, discourse ofadvertising, discourse structure of advertisingand such others. The second chapter deals with the methodology used in the study.The sources of data, sample population and sampling procedure, tools fordata collection, data collection procedures are included in this chapter. Chapter three is the main part of the study which includes analysisand interpretation of the data. The data is discussed descriptively,occasionally taking help of simple statistical tools like mean andpercentage. The last chapter encompasses with the findings andrecommendations made after the analysis of the data and conclusion ofthe study are also included within it.Item Language Used in Invitation for Bids: A Descriptive Study(Department of English Education, 2007) Bhandari, Niti RajThis study has made an attempt to find out thekind of language used ininvitation for bidsin terms of sentence types, tense, aspect, voice,word classandinformalitycontained on its formal writing.In this study simplesentence,non-past tense, simple aspect, passive voice were found to be maximally usedin invitation for bids of all three newspapers published from Nepal and anewspaper published from abroad covering more than half of the totalsentences. Even in the formal discourse of tender writing, some degree ofinformality was integrated which was clear from the use of abbreviations,imperatives and personal pronouns. Similarly, major world class was highlyused than minor word class. Even in themajor word class noun was found to behighly used. This thesis comprises of four chapters. The first chapter deals withgeneral background of the study, mass media and their impact in society,newspaper, introduction to bids, review of related literature, objectives,significance and definition of terms of the study. In the second chapter, the methodology adopted for the completion ofthe study is presented.Itincludes sources of data, sampling procedure, tools ofdata collection, process of data collection and some of the important limitationsof the study. Similarly, the third chapter presents analysis and interpretation of thecollected data for the study using simple statistical tools like average andpercentage. The comparison has been made mainly between the language usedin Nepali English Newspapers and English Newspapers from aboard to reachthe general conclusion. The fourth chapter of this thesis presents the findings and somerecommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data. At theendreferencesand appendices along with some sample invitation for bids arepresented.Item Language Used in Notices(Department of English Education, 2006) Neupane, Ram NathThis study entitled "Language used in Notices" intends to find out the constructions and functions of English notices. In order to collect the data, the researcher traveled to different parts of Kathmandu valley and recorded information of notices from notice boards kept in different places as well as outside. He also visited different offices, business firms, educational institutions, hospitals, etc to record information contained by English notices. He collected one hundred notices from different sectors. He further classified the whole data under five sectors, viz. Educational Institutions, Ministries and other Offices, Health Institutions and Hospitals, Business Firms and Miscellaneous. This study found that eleven types of constructions, viz. Verbless constructions,Finite constructions, Non-finite constructions, Passive constructions, Imperative constructions, Compound constructions, Complex constructions, Past tense, Non-past tense, Progressive aspect and Perfective aspect interms of five sectors as mentioned above,are used in English notices. Among them, verbless constructions are the mostfrequently used in English notices. This study further found that only ten language functions viz.Notifying , Requesting, Seeking information, Suggesting, Making obligation, Congratulating, Inviting, Making order, Prohibiting and Directing are prevalent.Among them, Requesting is the most frequently used functions in English notices. The first chapter comprises general background, sentence constructions and language functions of English notices, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,and significance of the study.Chapter two consists of the methodology of the study. It encompasses the source of data, sampling procedure, process of data collection and limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. It consists of mainly two parts: sentence constructions and language functions. These two parts are studied under five sectors as mentioned above. The final chapter deals with the findings and recommendations. Findings are derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data carried out in chapter three and recommendations are made on the basis of findings.Item Language Used in The News Stories :A Descriptive Study(2008, 2008) Adhikari, JivanThis studyanalyzed thelanguage used in the news stories from the viewpoint of thestructure, vocabulary, tense and aspect. The main objectives of the studywere to find out the characteristicfeatures of the language used in news stories in terms of sentence construction,voice, tense aspect and word classes. The study also compared thecharacteristic features among the four newspapers. For this purpose, theresearcher collected samples of news stories from four different newspapersnamely The Times, The Hindustan Times. The Kathmandu Post and TheHimalayan Times published from the UK, India and Nepal respectively. Thecollected stories included 200 sample structures. Among the major findings in structures, finite constructionswerefoundto have been used the highest among all the constructions. Imperativeconstructionswerenot found tohavebeenused inthe news stories. Regardingvocabulary, major wordswere morefrequent than the minor words. Regardingtense, past tensehadhigh frequency of use in the single element news stories.So far as aspectswereconcerned,thesimplepastwasfound tohave beenusedin all, the headline, the lead and the body. However,the simplepresenthasmainly used in the headline. Thethesisis divided into four chapters.Thefirst chapter is introductoryand consists of general background, review of the related literature, objectivesand significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodologyadopted for the study.The third chapter presents the analysis and interpretationof the data. A descriptive approach has been used for this purpose. The fourthchapter deals with the findingsandrecommendations. The references and appendices have been included in the lastpartof thethesis.Item Language Used on Radio Jockey: A Case of Kantipur Fm(Department of English Education, 2011) Baskota, Dinesh KumarThis present study‘ Language Used on Radio Jockey: A Case of Kantipur FM.’Is an attempt to analyze and describe the kinds of language used by Radio Jockey in terms of specific words, sentence types and language functions. This study was mainly based on the secondary sources of data. The data for the study were collected judgmentally from twenty-five regular programmes broad casted from Kanipur FM. The total sample of the study consisted of twenty-five programmes of different RJs. The required data were collected by using observation as a main tool. This studyrevealed that nouns, simple sentences and expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes were highly used by the RJs in their different programmes. The specific words found in the broadcast programme under this study were eleven thousand six hundred and seventy two words in total. This thesis is divided into four chapters.Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources of data, sampling procedure,tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Similarly, chapter three contains the analysis and interpretation of the data using simple statistical tools like frequency and percentage. Finally, chapter four presents the findings and recommendations of this research. In order to collect the data, the researcher travelled to different parts of Kathmandu valley and recorded information of translated advertisements from signboards kept in different places. She also visited to different offices, business firms, educational institutions, hospitals etc to record translated notices from Nepali to English language. she collected two hundred and seventy advertisements and thirty notices from different sectors. She further classified the whole data under ten sectors, viz. Press and Stationery, bank. Finance and Cooperative Society, Educational Institutions, Government and Non government Offices, Hotel-Travel and Tourism. Law Firms and Offices, Clinics Hospitals and Optical Center, Tailors and Beauty Parlours, Business Firms and Factories, and Public Services. This study found that only four translation strategies, viz. transliteration, literal, paraphrasing and free translation are used in translated advertisements and notices from Nepali to English language. Among the four, transliteration is the most frequently used in translated advertisements and notices. This study further found that only four linguistic gaps, viz. phonological, graphological, lexical and structural are used in translated advertisements and notices from Nepali to English language. The first chapter comprises general background, strategies and linguistic gaps in translated advertisements and notices from Nepali to English, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, and significance of the study. viii The chapter two consists of the methodology of the study. Findings are derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data carried out in chapter three and recommendations are made on the basis of findings.Item Use of Vocabulary In Proverbs and Quatations(Department of English Education, 2008) Bhantana, Kiranhis study has made an attempt to find out the vocabulary used in proverbs and quotations. This study is based on the secondary sources of data. The population of the study comprised 50 proverbs and same number of quotations mainly selected from English as a Second Language (ESL) related internet web sites, English books, and magazines. . The data were, collected randomly. The objectives of the study were to compare vocabulary in terms of major word classes and minor word classes; to point out their distribution as well as frequency and range used in proverbs and quotations.The researcher found that items of major word classes occurred more than those of minor word classes. Among major word classes, nouns used in quotations occupied the first positions and the adverbs used in proverbs took the last position. Among minor word classes, auxiliaries used in quotations secured the first position and numeralsused in proverbs the last position. Interjections were not found in both proverbs and quotations. The researcher found that nouns used in quotations occupied the first position with 18.34% (i. e. 271 out of 1478) distribution and adverbs used in proverbs occurred in the last position with 0.47 % (i.e. 7 out of 1478). The range (i. e. 264 ) and average (i. e. 67.18%) showed that proverbs are shorter than quotations due to their lower distribution of words..The thesis consists of four chapters. Each chapter has necessary sub chapters.
