Item Challenges faced by Maithili students in learning English(Department of English Education, 2023) Yadav, MamtaThis study entitled Challenges Faced by Maithili Students in Learning English intended to identify the challenges faced by Maithili students in learning English, to examine the factors that create challenges in learning English to the Maithili learners and to suggest some pedagogical implications. A mixed method research design was used in this study. Forty secondary level Maithili students of Sukhipur Municipality were selected as a simple random sampling procedure. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used as research tools. The data collected through questionnaire were analyzed descriptively and thematically. From the analysis of data and interpretations of the results, the researcher got the Maithili learners have problems to internalize the different component of word, grammar and pronunciation. It is difficult to relate the same language with our Maithili culture. So, the learners have difficulties to adopt the language. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction which consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter contains review of related literature and conceptual framework that consists of review of theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implications of the review of the study and conceptual framework. Similarly, the third chapter deal with methods and procedures of the study which covers design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools and techniques, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures and ethical considerations. Likewise, the fourth chapter contains the analysis and interpretation of the data. Furthermore, fifth chapter includes findings, conclusion and recommendations. Finally, the references and the appendices, which are necessary for the validation of the research, have also been included.Item Problems and Challenges Faced by Tharustudents in Learning English(Department of English Education, 2019) Chaudhary, Hira KumariThe study entitledProblems and Challenges Faced by Tharu Students inLearning Englishwas conducted to explore problems and challenges faced byTharu students in learning English. The study followed survey research design.Sixty Tharu students and four secondary level English language teachers fromfour community schools of Gadhawa, Dang were selected as the sample usingnon-random purposive sampling procedure. To elicit the data I used twodifferent sets of questionnaires consisting both open-ended and close-endedquestions to Tharu students and English teachers. The study found that theperception of Tharu students towards English is interesting.Similary,the Tharustudents are facing English language related problems and challenges such as,complex rules of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, slang colloquialism. TheEnglish teachers opined that they are also facing problems and challengeswhile teachingEnglish language to Tharu students. This thesis consists of five different chapters. The first chapter consists ofbackground of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study,research questions, significance of the study, delimitations ofthe study andoperational definition of the key terms. Finally,the fifth chapter incorporates the findings and conclusion of the studyfollowed by some policy related, practice related and further researchrelatedrecommendation based of the study.Item Reading Comprehension of Prose and Poem Texts(Department of English, 2010) Timsina, PrakashThis study has been designed to find out the reading comprehension ability of the ninth graders of Tehrathum district, especially of Nepali and non-Nepali mother tongue students. It shows the comprehension ability among the students of 5 different government aided schools. It also compares the reading comprehension ability between seen and unseen texts, poetic and prose texts and Nepali and non-Nepali mother tongue students. Such type of comparativestudy has not been conducted in Tehrathum district, regarding reading comprehension ability. To conduct the research, the researcher took the sample population studying in grade nine by stratified random sampling procedure of Tehrathum district. Twenty students were selected from each school for the data collection and among 20 students, 10 were ethnic and remaining 10 werenon-ethnic group students. Only written materials were provided to the students to collect data. After collecting the answer sheets, they were checked and markwasassigned. The finding of this study shows that the students of grade nine of Tehrathum district can comprehend seen and prose texts better than unseen and poetic texts. On the basis of this research the ethnic group students have better reading comprehension ability than non-ethnic group students. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter consists of general background and short description of reading comprehension ability. It also includes the review of the related literature, objective of the study, and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted for the study. Under methodology, the sources of data collection,sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitation of the study are included.The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of data obtained from the students’ answer sheets by using simple statistical tools. It consists of two parts. The first part deals with analysis and interpretation of poetic and prose texts, and seen and unseen texts by whole students. The second part deals with analysis and interpretation of poetic and prose texts, and seen and unseen texts by ethnic and non-ethnic students. The fourth chapter deals with the recommendations made on the basis of findings of the study. Bhim Kumar Shrestha,02/01/2011Item Use of mother tongue in English classes at basic level in community schools(Department of English Education, 2023) Chaudhary, BhagiramThis research entitled Use of Mother Tongue in English Classes at Basic Level in Community Schools was conducted to explore the roles of mother tongue instruction in English classes and challenges faced by Basic level English teachers.I used survey research design to carry out this research work. The population of the research included all the Basic Level English teachers of Community schools of Bardiya District. In addition, thirty English teachers were selected as the sample for the study by using non-random purposive sampling.I used a set of questionnaire which consisted of close and open-ended questions to collect the data. The data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively with the help of tables. The study showed that teachers used mother tongue for various purposes namely for giving complex instruction, cooperation, teaching difficult vocabulary, for motivation and providing feedback, for reducing inhibitions. Similarly, students from Tharu community used Tharu language; when they could not understand the meaning and concept of certain words, for asking questions, describing pictures and they also used mother tongue for promotion of cognitive development, building rapport with students, increasing students’ participation in activities. Additionally, it was found that the overuse of mother tongue in English classes reduced exposure, made the students lazy and hampered the learning, cannot pronounce English words correctly, lack of confidence to speak, reduced students’ opportunity to practice English speaking and listening. This thesis consist of five chapters.
