Item Achievement in Writing by Nepali and Tharu Native Speakers(Department of English Education, 2010) Chhetri, ManojThe present study aims to assess the achievement in writing by Nepali andTharu native speakers. The main focus of the study was directed towardwhether the achievement of writing differs because of difference inthe nativelanguages of the students; if it differs then to what extent? The study wascarriedout using bothprimary and secondary sources of data. For primary data,the ninth grade students of a government aided secondary school were taughtwriting. Altogether 26 students (13 Nepaliand 13 Tharu native speakers) wereselected as sample and taught writing on the basis of the original texts of theEnglish text book of grade nine. The representative examples from the threetypes of writing namely controlled, guided and free writing were chosen forteaching. The sampling procedure was purposive because ofthe availability ofthe Tharu students. During the data analysis the Nepali native speakersdominated the Tharu students in terms of scores all along. But the trend andrate of progress in writingseemed similar in both of the groups. In conclusion,different native languages of the learners do not necessarily show thesignificant gap between theirachievements.The first chapter consistsof background,definition of language, first language,second language, foreign languageand filter language.The theory of languageacquisition, monolingualism and bilingualism are also introduced in the firstchapter.The first chapter also includesthe writing skills, mechanics and othercomponents ofwriting,correctingscoring written works.The origin of actionresearch, its definition and process have been put in this chapter. The finalpartsof this chapter arereview of the related literature, objectives and significance ofthe study.The second chapter deals with the methodology applied in the study,the sources of data, sample population, sampling procedure, tools andprocedures for data collection. The chapter also states the limitations of thestudy.The third chapter presentsanalysis and interpretation. The fourth chapterconsists of the findings and recommendations based on the analysis andinterpretation of data. References and appendices are attached at the end.Item A Comparative Study on The Kinship terms in Tharu and The English Language(Department of English Education, 2007) Chaudhary, Satya NarayanIn this study, the researcher has analysed and interpreted differentkinship relations, their corresponding kinship terms and the forms to addressthose relations. The main objectives of the study were tofind out Tharu andEnglish kinship terms, compare and contrast them and suggest somepedagogical implications. To accomplish the purpose, the researchercollected data from60nativespeakers ofTharu inSunsari district for Tharukinship termsand from10native speakers ofEnglish fromtheUSA, the UK,Canada, Australia, and New Zealandfor English.Stratified random samplinghad been used in case of data collection for Tharu kinship terms.He hasalsoutilized his own conscience as a native speaker of Tharu.The samplingprocedure usedforcollecting data for English is purposive one. Thework is divided intofour chapters.The first chapter introducesthework in terms ofthe general background,Tharu language,English Language,general description of kinship, review of the related literature, objectives ofthe study, significance of the study, definition of technical terms andabbreviations. Chapter two familiarizes withmethodology. It consists of sources ofdata, population of thestudy, samplepopulation,sampling procedure, toolsfordata collection, process of datacollection, and limitations of the study. Chapter threepresents the analysis and interpretation of the data. Whileanalyzing the data an attempt has been made to compare and contrast thekinship terms in Tharu and English. `Chapter four discusses the findings of the study.The main finding isthat there are90 kinship terms in Tharu whereas only 34 kinship terms arethere in English. This shows that Tharu is richer than English regarding thetotal number of kinship terms. There are a few kinship terms andcorresponding addressive forms in the stock of English kinship vocabulary.Most of therelations are addressed by name in English whereas most of therelations in Tharu are addressed by kinship terms adding suffixes.On thebasis of the findings, some pedagogical implications and recommendationsare suggested.Item Making Offers in English and Tharu(Department of English Education, 2011) Yadav, Shambhu KumarThis research entitled 'Making Offers in English and Tharu has attempted to identify the forms of making offers used by Tharu native speakers and to compare them with the forms used by English native speakers on the basis offer mality level. Both primary and secondary sources of data have been utilized.The Tharu native speakers were the primary sources of data while previously conducted research and some authentic books such as Matrayek (1983),Blundell et al. (2009) were the secondary sources of data. The samples were selected through stratified random sampling procedure and they were provided questionnaires. The research found out that 112 different sentences were used by the English native speakers to make offers while 162 different sentences were used by the Tharu native speakers to make offers. Most of there spondents used interrogative forms of making offers in the English. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with general background and review of related literature. The second chapter includes methodology which was put into practice while collecting data. It includes sources of data, sampling procedure, tools and process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of collected data. Based on those analyzed and interpreted data,some findings and recommendations are provided in the fourth chapter.Additional information is placed is appendices at last.Item Pluralization in The Tharu and Englishlanguages(Faculty of Education, 2008) Chaudhary, Kishor KumarThe thesis entitled "PLURALIZATION IN THE THARU AND ENGLISHLANGUAGES" is an attempt to aim at identifying the rules of Pluralization in theTharu Language and comparing these rules with those of English and finding out thesimilarities and differences of pluralization system between the two languages: Tharuand English. The researcher utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. Thesample population of the study consisted of 30 Tharu native speakers who wereselected for the study by using stratified random sampling procedure to elicit requireddata. The interview questionnaire was developed as a research tool for both literateand illiterate informants. The three VDCs of Saptari district were selected to collectdata and collected data were analyzed, interpreted and presented descriptively andcomparatively with the help of table, diagram and illustration. The Pluralization rulesof English were extracted from the secondary sources and those of Tharu wereanalyzed on the basis of primary data. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction of thestudy. It consists of general background, review of the related literature, objectives ofthe study, significance of the study, definitions of the specific terms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It consists of sources of data, populationof the study, sampling procedure, tools for collecting data, process of data collectionand limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. Itcomprises the rules of Pluralization in English and Tharu, comparison of the processesof Pluralization in Tharu with those in English and similarities and differencesbetween Tharu and English. Chapter four encompasses the findings of the study and somerecommendations and pedagogical implications.Item Request Forms in Tharu and English(Faculty of Education, 2009) Chaudhary, Rama nandThis thesis entitled “Request Forms inTharuand English”wasan attempt tofind out the request forms intheTharu language and compare and contrastthem with those of English. The researcher used both primary and secondarysourcesof data. The sample population of the study consisted of 80 nativespeakers of Tharu including educated and uneducated. Among80 informants,40 were educated and equalnumberof uneducated informants were there. Theresearcher used stratified random sampling procedure to sample the population.The interviewschedulefor uneducated and written questionnaire for educatedpopulation werethe research tools for the data collection. On the basis of thecollected data theanalysis and interpretation weredone descriptively andcomparatively with the help of tables, diagrams and illustrations.The findingshowed that Tharu native speakers were less polite thanEnglish nativespeakers and the Tharu people used 57.77% direct requests. This thesis contains four chapters viz. introduction, methodology, analysis andinterpretation, and finding and recommendations.The first chapter deals withintroduction which consists of general background, the EnglishlanguageinNepal, thelanguagesof Nepal, the Tharu language, language functions, therequest formsof English sentences, importance of requesting in language, anoverview of pragmatics, different views onpoliteness,need and importance ofCA,reviewoftherelated literature,objectives of thestudy, significance of thestudy and the definitions of the specific terms.The second chapters deals withmethodology, adopted for the study. It consists of sources of data, populationof the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection and limitationsof thestudy. Similarly, the third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation ofthe data. It consistsofrequest forms in the Tharu language with illustrationsand comparison of the request forms of the Tharu language with those ofEnglish.
