Abstract: This research attempts to compare "supplement" and "contrapuntal reading". These toolsreveal the marginalized andtherebycounter the centre. However, the most significant difference between them is that the former is bound within textual space whereas the later takes any textas a form ofcultural discourseand locates it in context. Besides, the former establishes the playbysubverting hierarchy whereas the perspective ofalterity remains in the later. Application of supplement in Conrad's Heart of Darknessrevealsthatthe theme of "exploration oftheself"andsupplements to the"exploration of the evil" whereas readingofthe same text contrapuntallyshows it as purely colonial though theearliercriticssawitas anti-colonial.
