dc.description.abstractKamala Markandaya by bringing into contact two different cultures has shown how different strategies come into play to represent characterization inNectar in a Sieve. Acknowledgement of cultural, economic and social differences makes the characters fickle in their decisions as to whether to accept or disdain their culture. Rukmani represents the strength and perseverance of the traditional Indian culture; she tries to retain its beliefs and customs even though the times of changes and adversity. She has innate respect, reverence and love towards her culture of origin. Consequences of westernization, good and bad are illustrated within this text to highlight the global occurrences of this period. Even though there is a great influence of western actions and attitudes, Rukmani maintains her heritage’s traditional and beliefs throughout her life.en_US
