Item Ability in the Use of Prepositions in Free Writing(Faculty of Education, 2011) Karki, PabitraThe present study entitled "The Use of Prepositions in Free Writing" was carried out with the aim of finding out the ability to use prepositions in free writing of grade nine students, and comparing the ability of grade nine students of the government and private schools. It was a quantitative research, and the respondents were forty selected students and ten English teachers of grade nine from four schools namely Shree Janapriya Higher Secondary School, Amar Singh Higher Secondary School, Prativa Higher Secondary School, and Kumudini Homes Higher Secondary School of Pokhara valley. The schools and the students were selected using judgmental sampling procedure. Six topics were provided to these selected students and they were asked to write on any one of these topics and questionnaires were distributed to these grade nine English teachers. The collected data was analyzed to find out the ability to use prepositions in free writing of grade nine students. On the basis of analysis and interpretation some findings are derived and some recommendations have been made to improve the existing pedagogical situation. The results of this study indicated that grade nine students of private schools use more prepositions, more correctly than the students of government-aided schools. Prepositions in, of and to are frequently used prepositions whereas along, towards, during, between, through, after, around, up, besides, inside, into were rarely used prepositions. This thesis consists of four chapters .Chapter one includes theoretical background and introduction of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two consists of sources of data (primary and secondary), population of the study, sample population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. The data were analyzed separately in two parts: i, analysis and interpretation of the data collected from these forty selected students i.e. students' essays, and ii, analysis and interpretation of the questionnaires with the help of statistical tools like percentage. This chapter analyzed the total used prepositions as frequently and rarely used prepositions, and correctly and wrongly used prepositions. Chapter four incorporates of summary, findings and recommendations. On the basis of analysis and interpretation made in third chapter some findings have been listed and, in turn on the basis of these findings some recommendations have been made at the end of chapter four.Item Effectiveness of Language Games to Enhance Speaking Ability of Grade Eight Students(Central Department of Education English, 2017) Bista, DurgaThe title of this thesis is Effectiveness of Language Games to Enhance Speaking Ability of Grade Eight Students. The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of language games in developing speaking skill. This is an experimental research. For this research, first of all, the instruments which were required for the study were constructed. Test items for both pre-test and post test were prepared. The words for the test items were selected from the textbook of Our English Book, Grade Eight. The pre-test was administered to the sample before the actual classroom teaching. The students were split in two groups i.e., experimental and controlled on the basis of odd and even roll number. The experimental group was taught using language games whereas the controlled group was taught without using any materials. The five oral test items was administered for both the groups. Each group was taught for twenty eight days, one period in a day and each period lasted for 45 minutes. Finally, the post test was administered to both the groups. Each student's speaking skill was recorded and analyzed. This has been found that students under experimental group have performed better than controlled group. The overall findings of the study showed that the use of language games has a positive impact in developing speaking skill of the students. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one consists of brief introduction to related field of the study. It consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, hypothesis/research question, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms in these chapters.Chapter two deals with the review of related literature. Chapter three deals with the methodologies and procedures adopted during the study. Similarly, Chapter four deals with the analysis and interpretation of the study under different heading. Chapter five comprises findings, conclusion and recommendations of the study in brief.Item Essay Writing Ability of Students of Grade Seven(Central Department of Education English, 2017) Chaudhary, Shambhu PrasadThis research entitled Essay Writing Ability of Students of Grade Seven is an attempt to find out the essay writing ability of the students of grade seven and to compare the essay writing ability of grade seven students of public schools with that of private schools. The researcher selected forty eight students from four different schools (two public schools and two private schools) of Saptary district through purposive non-random sampling procedure. The test items were used (i.e. three essay type questions) as the main tools for data collection. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted with the help of tables and using some statistical tools such as mean and percentage. This research study shows that students of public school were poor in comparison to the students of private school as the students of public school got 57.81% whereas the students of private school got 68.04% in average. Moreover, students (i.e. 54.16%) was found better in private school i.e. 7.58 (75.83%) in subject matter, 4.38 (86.66%) in grammar, 2.87 (87.5%) in language and 1.25 (31.25%) in style than the students of public school. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the topic in which background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of key terms. The second chapter covers the review of related theoretical, review of related empirical literature, implications of the review for the study, and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with methods and procedures of the study which includes design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures and ethical considerations. The fourth chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of results. It also includes analysis of data, interpretation of results. It also includes analysis of data, interpretation of results and summary of findings. The five chapter deals with conclusions and recommendations followed by references and appendices. The recommendation is subsumed under policy related, practice related and further research related respectively.Item Lower Secondary Level Students’ Proficiency on Reading Comprehension(Faculty of Education Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Kathmandu, Nepal, 2016) Singh, AbisaraThe present research work entitled Lower Secondary Level Students’ Proficiency on Reading Comprehension was an attempted to find out the students‟ proficiency in reading comprehension of the eighth grade. For this, forty students of grade eight were sampled from four different schools; two private and two public schools of Kathmandu district through non-random sampling procedure. A set of test comprising of short question, true/false items, matching items, fill in the blanks items and vocabularies items was administered in order to find out the students‟ proficiency on reading comprehension. After the analysis and interpretation of the collected data, it was found that the average students‟ proficiency on reading comprehension of school was excellent whereas students‟ proficiency on reading comprehension of public school was very good. In comparision, lower secondary level students‟ proficiency on reading comprehension of private school was better than public schools. The study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter includes the general background, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions key terms. The second chapter deals with the review of related theoretical literature and review of related empirical literature. It also includes implication of review for the study and conceptual framework. The third chapter includes the methods and procedures of the study. It subsumes design of the study, population and sample, sampling procedure, data collection procedure, data analysis and interpretation procedure. Chapter four encompasses the results and discussion of the collected data. The last chapter consists of summery, conclusions and implications of the study. The implications have been presented into three levels, i.e. policy, practical and further research level. The final part includes references and appendices as well.Item Perception of Secondary Level English Language Teachers on Testing Listening Skill(Tribhuvan University Faculty of Education Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal, 2016) Rayamajhi, Chhap BahadurThe present thesis entitled ‘Perception of Secondary Level English Teachers on Testing Listening Skill’ aimed to find out the perception of secondary level teachers on testing listening skill. The data were collected using the questionnaire to the secondary level English language teachers. The sample size consists of 30 teachers from 30 government aided schools of Kathmandu district. This study shows that the majority of the teachers were found having good theoretical insights on testing listening skill in the secondary classes. However, they do not test listening on a regular basis as equal to testing reading and writing. The highest number of teachers (50%) perceived that testing listening includes teaching as a basic skill and 26% of teachers perceived that it was tested satisfactorily. This thesis is divided into five chapters and other sub-chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, statement of the problem, research questions, objectives of the study, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter deals with the review of theoretical literature, empirical review of the related literature, implications of review and conceptual framework. The fourth chapter deals with results and discussion. The collected data are presented in this chapter. On the basis of analyzed data, summary, conclusion and implications have been made in the fifth chapter. References and appendices have been presented in the final part of this thesis.Item Reading Comprehension Ability of Danuwar Students(Department of English Education, 2011) Nepal, DineshThis research entitled ‘Reading Comprehension Ability of Danuwar Students’attempted to find out the reading comprehension ability of Danuwar students. Inorder to do so I collected the data from the Danuwar students studying in grade ten in five different schools of Kavrepalanchok district. Only sixty sample students were selected. Twelve students from each school were selected through nonrandom sampling procedure and both the seen and the unseen texts were used in the test. Seen text was selected from the English text book of grade ten and unseen test item was selected from outside the course book to find out the reading comprehension ability of students. Similarly, a questionnaire was given and test items were administered and raw score of the students was analyzed and interpreted using the statistical tools. This study found the total reading comprehension of the students was 63%. The average reading comprehension ability of the students in the seen and the unseen text was 71.61% and 54.39%respectively.This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction.It consists of general background, language skills, defining reading, types of reading,introduction about Danuwar people, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study. It consists of the sources of data, sampling procedure, and tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study.Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of data. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive approach and simple statistical tools. Chapter four presents the findings and recommendations. Recommendation sare made on the basis of findings.Item Reading Comprehension Ability of Grade Ten Students(Central Department of Education English, 2017) Kumal, Ganga RamThis is a study on Reading Comprehension Ability of Grade Ten Students. It aimed at finding out the reading comprehension ability of grade ten students in term of; discovering main idea, identifying details, finding out the meaning of vocabulary and summarizing the information after reading. This study also comparedthe comprehension ability of male and female students. Itwas based on survey design. Non-random purposive sampling procedure was used to select the forty students studying in Grade 10 from 2 public schools of Dang district as the sample. Test itemswere used as the research tools in this study. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted in the form of table and descriptions. The statistical tools like mean, standard deviation and z- testwere used to analyze and interpret the data. The major findings showed that students had partially acceptable proficiency in readingon the basis of Secondary Education Examination. In comparison to male students, the proficiency of female students was low in both seen and unseen text. The students’ proficiency level was satisfactory inidentifying details whereastheir proficiency level was very in sufficient insummarizing the informationon the basis of S.E.E. grading system. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introductory chapter. The fifthchapter presents the conclusion and recommendations of this research in different levels such as policy related, practice related and further research related ones. References and appendices form are the concluding part of the thesis.
