Item Contextual Analysis of Cultural Termsin Translation: A Case of "Bruised Evening"(Faculty of Education, 2014) Sharma, YogarajThe present research study entitledContextual Analysis of Cultural Terms in Translation: A Case ofBruised Eveningis an attempt toanalyze thetranslation ofcultural terms contextually. The main purposeof the study was to analyze the cultural terms used in translationand thecontextual analysisof these termsin the case ofBruised Evening. Itaimed to explorethe causes of loss of meaning in translation. Onlythesecondary sources of data were used in the study. Qualitative data wereused with descriptive and analytical study. The study made the contextualanalysis of cultural terms used in the drama Bruised Evening and tried tofind out whetheror notthe termsweretranslated contextually using theequivalent cultural terms or not.Thethirty cultural terms werecategorized in five catogories, such as: Ecological cultural, Materialcultural, Social cultural, Religious cultural and Coceptual cultural terms.In the translating of some cultural terms the translator has used theanother words instead of the equavalent words without any context. Forexample:dhartihas been used to indicate toBhaktapurand has beenchanged intoland. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces thegeneral background, review of the related literature, objectives of thestudy and significance of the study. The second chapter deals withthemethodology adopted for the study. It encompasses sources of data,processof data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter threepresents an analysis and interpretation of the data. In this chapter,datahave been analyzed and interpreted descriptively. Chapter four presentsthe findings from the analysis of data. On the basis of the findings,somesuggestions have been made for pedagogical implication.Item Multiple Translation of Nepali National Anthem from Linguisticand Cultural Perspectives(Department of English Education, 2011) Baniya, Bharat KumarThe studyentitled "Multiple Translation of Nepali National Anthem fromLinguistic and cultural Perspective" is an attempt of the researcher for findingout the techniques of translation and their frequencies that are used intranslating the linguistic and cultural words of the lyrics into English, as well asthe comparison of each translated versions. For the fulfillment of theobjectives, three English translated versions (two professional translators'versions and theone translated by thepost office, government of Nepal) wereincluded along with the original version of the lyrics. Altogethersixty eightwords were identified and categorized under the linguistic and culturalcategories and their corresponding words of three Englishtranslated versions ofthe same lyrics were included for the study. These linguistic words werecategorized as noun, verb, Adjective Pronoun and Conjunction, and the culturalwords were categorized as ecology, material, social, religious culture andconceptual terms in terms of their affiliation to the certain categories.Anecdotal evaluation and statistical descriptionapproaches were used toanalyzethe data. The findings of the study showed that altogether ten differenttechniques: literal translation,transference, functional equivalence, deletion,addition, elaboration, definition, CTO and substitution were adopted intranslating these words. Among them, literal translation was the mostfrequently usedtechnique, which has covered 64.29 per cent and 53.85 per centof the totallinguistic and cultural words respectively. Definition and CTQ werethe least frequently used techniques in translating the cultural words which hascovered 1.28 per cent of the total cultural words. The studyhas been divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the studyin terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives andsignificance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology which issub-categorized as the sources of data, samplingprocedure, tools, process ofdata collection and the limitation of the study. Chapter three presents thestatistical analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four discuses thefindings of the study,on the basis ofthefindings, some recommendations andpedagogical implicationshavebeensuggested. The references and appendicesare the concluding parts of the study.Item Prevalence of Intestinal Parasite With Respect To Socio-Economic Aspect in Dom Community Of Janakpur Municipality, Dhanusha(Central Department of Zoology Institute of science and Technology Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu Nepal, 2017) Jha, Praful ChandraThe Dom is considered the lowest untouchable caste groups of the Terai. They are not allowed to fetch water either from the private or public tube-wells. They have separate tube-wells for their own use or go to the nearby stream/pond to fetch water. Making a variety of baskets from the bamboo is their traditional caste occupation. In addition, grave-digging and cremating dead bodies are also considered their traditional occupation. These are their main source of earning a livelihood (Sah 2005). The present study was carried out to analyze the prevalence rate of gastrointestinal parasite infection among people of Dom community. A group of 210 people were enrolled in the study out of which 80 were females and 130 were males. Stool smear examination was performed on each individual to identify the parasites. The overall frequency of intestinal parasites observed in the study were 33% protozoa and 4% helminths respectively. The observed protozoan parasites include E. histolytica and G. lamblia, which is present in both the sexes. Similarly the helminth parasites observed were Hookworm and A. lumbricoides. But A. lumbricoides is present only in female, not in male. The overall prevalence indicated that males were more infected with parasite infection than female. The age wise prevalence indicated maximum parasitic infection in 5-20 years of age group. The conclusion from KAP survey indicated that poor sanitary condition, lack of knowledge of parasitic diseases and its transmission, poor economic status and compulsions of the culture enhanced the percentage of parasitic infection in the Dom community of Janakpur.Item Representation of Harlem Renaissance Spirit in Jean Toomer’s Cane(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2010-03) Dhakal, ShantaJean Toomer’s Cane stands as an outstanding novel which highlights the African American culture of the Harlem Renaissance period. Harlem Renaissance refers to the flowering of African American cultural and intellectual life during the 1920s. Karintha, Carma, Dorris, Kabnis, Halsey, Hanby are the black characters in the novel who attempt to uplift the African American culture through music, dance, art, literature, language and so on. Kabnis, the main protagonist of the novel, goes to South in Georgia to teach in a school in the hope of discovering his root that marks the novelist’s exploration of the root of African American people to preserve their identity and culture.Item A Study of Doteli Cultural Songs from Biocentric Lenses(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2012-06) Joshi, BhupeshEnvironmental literature aims at reading the earth closely to understand its patterns and systems. Environment is the foundation of all organisms which are interconnected and dependent on each other for their existence. The present thesis undertakes the study of Doteli cultural songs from biocentric lense in Saguns and Phags. This study delinates the econogical value and its preservation through the Phag Songs. Saguns and Phags are holy women songs created and sung by women which deserves the value of holy Vedic incantation. In Doti region, any ritual, cultural and religious performances are performed with the privileged presence of the prist, the organizer and the Sagun singers. Women sing Sagun and Phags on the occasions rituals and ceremonies. In order to dramatize cultural significance of several ceremonies practiced in Far-Western region. Such as: naming ceremony, initiation ceremony and marriage ceremony. The major thrust of the research is that these songs highlight the use of and praise for different elements of nature by man. Man’s association with nature is revealed to be less anthropocentric and more biocentric in these songs.Item Theme of Nostalgia in Clear Light of Day(Department of English, 2006) Parday, Mitra LalAnita Desai in her widely acclaimed novel Clear Light of Dayhas shown the theme of nostalgia by showing the feuding family harking back to the hazy past. The researcher claims that by foregrounding the childhood games and the fairy tales the novelist is highlighting the nostalgia which helps heal the wound brought about by the feud in the family.
