Avoiding the ‘day to day’ and real life communicativeEnglish, the purpose of language teaching can’t be fulfilled. So to find outthe basic objective of language teaching and learning and mainly, to testthat the current English language course has been able to fulfill thelearners’ need or not is the main concern of this dissertation. In order todo so, the researcher has tried to examine the communicative proficiencyof Bachelor level students. The research work attempts to find out the ability to usecommunicative English of B.A. and B.Ed. first year students. Theresearcher collected data from B.A. and B.Ed. first year students. Thetotal sample population of the study consists of 100 students selected byusing random sampling procedure. To elicit the required data, the researcher has used both types ofsources, primary and secondary. The primary source of data consists ofBachelor Level Students. Equal number of boys and girlswere includedin the study. The communicative abilities were determined using simplestatistical tools such as average, percent, etc. The study found that the proficiency in communicating abilities ofB.A. and B.Ed. 1 st year was not satisfactory. Comparatively theproficiency of B.Ed. students was found slightly satisfactory than thestudents of B.A. 1 st year. Communicative proficiency of all the studentswas better in receptive and written (production) abilities of languagefunction than oral (production) test. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one consists of thegeneral background, review of the related literature, objectives of thestudy and significance of the study. viii Chapter two consists of the methodology of the study. Itencompasses the sources of data, population of study, samplingprocedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection andlimitations of study. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of thecollected data. The data were analyzed on the basis of variables specifiedobjectives i.e. the holistic, stream-wise, campus-wise, gender-wise, anditem-wise analysis of the students’ proficiency in communication inEnglish. Chapter four consists of the major findings and recommendationsof the study.Item Effectiveness of Dramatization Technique in Teaching Language Functions(Department of English Education, 2011) Lamsal, PrakashThe present study entitled "The Effectiveness ofDramatizationTechnique inTeaching Language Functions" endeavors to find out the efficacy of dramatizationtechnique in teaching language functions at secondary level and aims at suggestingsome pedagogical implications. To this end, I purposively selected a private school,Salbas Sunrise Higher Secondary School from Nawalparasi district. In order to collectdata, both, theprimary andthesecondary sources, were used. Thirty-three students ofGrade IX, who were selected using simple random sampling procedure, wereinvolved in this study. The students were divided into two groups, anexperimentalgroup anda controlled group. The main tools for data collection were tests items. Apre-test was administered before students were divided into two groups. Both thegroups were taught for 24 days(the experimental group was taught usingdramatization technique and the controlled group was taught as usual classroomtechniques). Afterthetreatment, the post-test was administered,by using the samesets of test itemsthat were administered in the pre-test. After analysis andinterpretation of the data the experimental group which was taught through dramatechnique excelled the controlled group by 21.64% holistically. Thus, I can say thatthe dramatization technique was more effective, interactive and interesting than usualclassroom techniques like discussion and lecture. The thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter consists of thebackground of the study, review of the related literature and objectives of the study.Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which thesources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of datacollection and limitation of the study are presented. Likewise, chapter threepresentsthe analysis and interpretation of the data. In this section, both the statistical as well asdescriptive approaches have been used. Finally, the present research summarizes thewhole study by presenting findings and suggesting some recommendations.Item Effectivenessof Simulation Technique in Teaching Language Functions(2010) Rai, GovindaThe present study entitled “Effectiveness of Simulation Technique in Teaching LanguageFunctions” endeavors to find out the effectiveness of simulation in teaching languagefunctions at secondary level and aims at suggesting some pedagogical implications.Tothisend, Ipurposively selected a government school,Gokundeshwor Higher SecondarySchoolfrom Dhankuta district. In order to collect data, both the primary and secondarysources were used. Twenty studentsofGrade IX whowere selected by using simplerandomsampling procedure, were involved in this study. The students were divided intotwo groups’experimentalgroupand controlledgroup. The main tools for data were testitems. A pre-test was administered before students were divided into two groups. Boththe groups were taught for 25 days. The experimental group was taught by usingsimulation technique and the controlled group was taught as usual classroom techniques. After experimental teaching, the post-test was administered by using the same sets oftestitems that were administered in the pre-test. After analysis and interpretation of the data, the experimentalgroup which was taught by using simulation excelled the controlledgroup by 27.73% in functional category and 29.93% in item category holistically. Thus,Ican saythat the simulation technique was more effective, interactive and interesting thanusual classroom techniques like discussion and lecture. The thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter consists of thebackgroundof the study, review of the related literature and objectives of the study.Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources ofdata, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection andlimitationsof the study are presented. Likewise, chapter three presents the analysis andinterpretation of the collected data. In this section, both the statistical as well asdescriptive approaches have been used. It is both quantitive and qualitative inquiry, based on multi-method approach, descriptive and narrative analysis of the data. I collected data from 10 secondary schools of Tanahun district by using questionnaire for 40 students and 10 teachers. Three classes of each teacher were observed by using observation checklist. The findings of this research show that majority of the teachers taught listening lesson in the classroom. The teachers, who taught listening, did not use proper strategies while teaching listening lessons. The teaching listening strategies such as question answer activities, written exercises relevant to the topics and following instruction for the while listening activities were not found in the teaching listening classroom. The teachers used cassette player twice more, discussion about the situation before listening, asked their students to listen, summarized lesson, focused on important elements, giving background information and encouraged practice after teaching listening lessons. The students had faced problems in learning listening due to background knowledge and problems in materials. This study consists of four chapters. The first chapter provides theoretical input for strategies used in teaching and learning listening, review of related literature, significance of the study and objectives. Similarly, the second chapter deals with the research methodology adopted for the study in which the sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, processes of data collection and limitations of the study are included. Likewise, the third chapter deals with descriptive and quantitive analysis of the collected data. These are based on questionnaire for students and teacher, and classroom observation of teachers. The researcher herself was involved in theexperimental teaching for the purpose of carrying out the research. Thetests (pre-test andpost-test) were the major tools for data elicitation. A pre-test was administered beforeactual classroom teaching and a post-test was administered immediately after classroomteaching. The same set of test-items was used in both typeof tests. The test-items wereused for written test. Each item was of twenty marks and contained 20 questions each. On the basis of the result of the pre-test, the students were ranked according totheir individual scores and then they were divided into two groups, i.e. Group ‘A’ andGroup ‘B’. Group ‘A’ was taught inductively whereas Group ‘B’ was taught deductively. Both groups were taught the same grammatical items, i.e. conditional sentences, using thesame instructional materials which were prepared before classroom teaching. Each groupwas taught for two weeks two periods a day and each period was of 45 minutes. After teaching two weeks, a post-test was administered. The result of the pre-testand post-test were tabulated and analyzed group-wise from different angles, i.e.comparison in general, item-wise comparison, sex-wise comparison and group-wisecomparison of boys and girls in different test items separately to achieve the objective ofthe study. This study shows that deductive method is more effective and more meaningfulthan the inductive one in teaching conditional sentences in English. Therefore, it isrecommended that deductive method should be applied by the teachers to teachconditional sentences in English in general. This thesis is divided into four chapters: introduction, methodology, analysis andinterpretation, and findings and recommendations. The first chapter introduces the study in terms of General Background i.e.Importance of English Language, Importance of Grammar, Method of TeachingLanguage/Grammar, its differences, Conditional Sentences: Forms, Meaning and Rules,Rational of the Study, Review of Related Literature, Objectives of the Study,Significance of the Study and Definition of the Specific Terms. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry out this research. It contains primary and secondary sources of data, population of the study, samplingprocedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. Thischapter includes, the analysis of the data in comparison of the performance of thestudents on the basis of different test items to find out the relative effectiveness ofinductive or deductive method. The final chapter presents the findings and recommendations, findings are derivedfrom the data interpretation and recommendations are made on the basis of the findings inchapter three.Item Use of Authentic Materials in Extensive Reading(Department of English Education, 2011) Shahee, ParbatiNot available
