Item An Analysis of Grade Seven English Textbook(Department of English Education, 2023) Yadav, Sushmita KumariThe present research entitled An Analysis of Grade Seven English Textbook aims at analyzing the English textbook of grade seven in terms of physical aspects(layout, cover page design, size of textbook, lettering and spacing, binding and paper quality) and academic aspects (objectives, content, presentation, exercise, function,illustration). The current basic level English textbook of grade seven was the main source of this research work. The data were collected through a set of questionnaire including open and close-ended questions. Then the data were analyzed and interpreted statistically and descriptively. This study reveals that Curriculum Development Center (CDC) has tried to make the textbook best but there are some shortcomings in terms of physical and academic aspects of the textbook which need to be improved. However the strong aspects of the textbook include attractive cover page, clearly reflected objectives and sufficient exercises whereas the weakness includes poor paper quality, poor binding, uncleared pictures, lack of grammatical exercises, lack of supplementary materials as well as instruction for teachers. Finally,some suggestions are provided for the improvement of the textbook. This thesis has been divided into five chapters. The first chapter consists of introductory part, which deals with background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study,delimitations of the study and operational definition of key terms. The second chapter incorporates the review of related literature, theoretical framework and conceptual framework. The third chapter includes methods and procedures. It consists of research design, primary and secondary sources of data, population of the study, sample population, tools for the data collection and process of data collection. The fourth chapter analyzes and interprets the date statistically and descriptively. The fifth chapter presents the findings, conclusion and recommendations. Finally, it includes references and appendices.Item An Analysis of New Spark English Reader for Grade VI(Faculty of English Education, 2015) Chaudhary, Chet NarayanThis thesis entitled An Analysis of New Spark English Reader for Grade VI is an attempt to analyze the textbook in terms of its physical aspects, academic aspects,the needs and interest of the learners. In the process of this study, the researcher collected data from primary and secondary sources. The primary sources of data were the English teachers who are teaching Spark English Reader and students who are being taught it as a textbook in different parts of Nawalparasi District. The main secondary source of data is the textbook itself. In order to collect the data, two sets of questionnaire have been prepared for the teachers and students. Apart from this, the researcher himself studied the textbook in detail. The obtained data have been tabulated and analyzed using a simple statistical tool. The findings of the study are based in teachers’and students’ perceptions on the textbooks. The findings are the textbook incorporates interesting reading; data based on factual information derived from native Nepali and English culture, and it is able to motivate the learners. The textbook to a great extent exhibits authenticity of reading materials on 70% of respondents agree with it. It incorporates some para orthographic text such as table and diagram and there fore, it provides the learners with a wide reading experience. Glossary, a very important part of a language textbook is not given; all teachers and students have negative response on it. The exercise is sufficient for the students in developing academic skills since 70% of the respondents agree with it. The present study is divided into five major chapters. The first chapter deals with a brief introduction to the English language, textbook and its importance, types of textbook, theoretical framework of a textbook, of textual analysis and qualities of a good textbook.The second chapter X deals with review of related literature. The third chapter deals with the methods and procedures of the study adopted to carry out this research work under which the design of the study, population and sample (for quantitative study) or field/areas of the study (for qualitative study),sampling procedure, data information collection tools, data information collection procedures and data analysis and interpretation procedures are presented.The fourth chapter includes with result and discussion,analysis and interpretation of data collected from different sources. This chapter is divided into four sections; the first section deals with the teacher’s responses on the qualities of a textbook and then the second section deals with teachers’open responses on the qualities of the textbook. Similarly, the third presents students’response on the qualities of the textbook. The last section describes students’open responses on the qualities of the textbook. The last chapter consists of findings derived from the result and discussion,analysis and interpretation of the textbook. Finally some conclusions, implications (policy level, practice level, further research)have been made for its further improvement. The supportive materials such as, questionnaire and their responses are presented in the appendix section of thesis.Item Attitude of teachers and students towards the use of social media in teaching and learning english(Department of English Education, 2021) Lama, ShashiThe thesis entitled, Attitude of Teachers and Students towards the Use of Social Media in Teaching and Learning English was an attempt to explore the role of social media in teaching and learning English Language and to find out the attitude of teachers and students towards it. In order to complete this research, survey method was used to collect data and both open and closed ended questionnaire were used as research tools. Sample population were selected randomly. 100 students and 5 secondary English teachers were selected from 5 community schools in Makawanpur district. The data was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative procedures. The study showed that social media was very useful for learning and teaching English during lock down. It was beneficial not only because it reduced physical distance but also reduced the monotony of traditional classroom teaching and brought liveliness in learning. Both teacher and students have positive attitude towards using social media but they emphasize not to overlook its negative effects if we misused it. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introducing chapter. It includes the background of the study, statement of problem, objective of the study, research questions, and significance of the study, delimitation of the study and operational definitions of key terms. The second chapter deals with the review of related literature and conceptual framework of the study, where I have reviewed theoretical and empirical l literature and also mentioned the implication of empirical literature. The third chapter consists of methodology which incorporates research deign and method, population, sample and sampling strategy, field site of the study, data collection tools and techniques and data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures and ethical consideration.In chapter four, the collected data have been analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative procedures. Close ended questions are presented numerically using tables and open ended questions are presented verbally. Theprimary data was elicited from25 students of grade eight of Baisnavi SecondarySchool, Bhajangalby administrating time-on-task, pre-test, post-test andprogressive tests. For the secondary data, I mainly used grade six, seven and eightEnglish textbooks.Analysisand interpretation ofthe datahas shown notableeffect of communicative activities in teaching English prepositions. Finally, referencesand appendicesare on the concluding part oftheresearch.Item The Effectiveness of Pictures in Teaching English Prepositions(Department of English Education, 2011) Neupane, PramodThis study was concerned with the effectiveness of pictures in teaching English prepositions. The researcher selected forty students of grade-VII from a government school; "Shree Badi Malika Secondary School" Syuna, Kalikot, as sample population.A test consisting of five different test items was the main tool for data collection. Apre-test was given before starting teaching to determine the existing proficiency of the students. Then, they were divided into two groups on the basis of the odd-even roll number according to the individual scores obtained in the pre-test. After dividing the minto two groups, both groups were taught the same subject matter using the same materials. Pictures were used for teaching preposition in group ‘A’ and the usual teaching technique was used for teaching prepositions in group 'B'. After the completion of the teaching a post-test (the same pre-test item) was given. Then, the results of both the pre-test and the post-test were compared to determine the effectiveness of two techniques. The main finding of the study is that teaching prepositions through picture at grade-VII was more effective than teaching without using pictures. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Each chapter is divided into different sub-chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study review of the literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology, data gathering procedure and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis, interpretation and presentation of the data. In order to accomplish the objectives of the study, the researcher sampled 10 schools of Sukuna Resource Centre of Morang district. From these schools, 10 teachers and 60 students were selected and different sets of questionnaires were distributed to them. Data were collected from them and analyzed using a simple statistical tool like percentage. Similarly, the researcher himself observed the classes of those teachers using an observation form and data and data from observation were also analyzed by percentage tools. The researcher found that subject matter is interesting and understandable to the students. The exercises encourage the students to learn more. The textbook is easy for handling and carrying. Printing is free from errors. Subject matter talks about the Nepalese culture. The content does not talk about human rights and technological world. Exercises are not sufficient for practice. The grammatical rules and exercises are not sufficient. This study consists of five chapters. Chapter – I deals with the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, delimitation of the study. Chapter – II consists of review of theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implications of the review of the study and conceptual frame work. Chapter – III consists of design and method of the study population and sample population, sampling method, study areas, data collections tools and techniques, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation. Chapter – V is about the conclusions and recommendations that have been made on the basis of findings of the study.Item Novelty and creativity in teaching English: Teachers' perceptions of secondary schools(Department of English Education, 2022) Pun Magar, Deepak BabuThis is a study on the teachers’ perceptions on novelty and creativity in teaching English in the secondary. It aims to explore the facts on how teachers perceive that teaching learning activities should be carried out to promote students’ novelty and creativity in the English language classrooms. This study has explored varieties of ELT materials and resources that can be used for promoting students’ novelty and creativity. It was based on the survey research. The data for the study were collected from 40 secondary level English language teachers. The results from this study indicate that the call for novelty and creativity in teaching English in classroom can be addressed through the use of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies accompanied by effective teaching materials and resources. In nutshell, the study reveals the secondary school teachers’ perceptions that students’ novelty and creativity can be enhanced by the use of various teaching learning methods and strategies aided by various teaching materials and resources. The study also gives an overview that the use of such teaching methods and strategies along with the use of proper teaching materials and resources, transforms the traditional classrooms, and can be very motivating and interesting to the learners. This thesis is composed of five prime chapters. Each of these chapters consists of some specific content of the study. The first chapter is the introductory part; the second chapter includes the review of literature; the third chapter is related to methodology; the fourth chapter is the detailed analysis and interpretation of the data; and the fifth chapter concludes this study.Item A study on the use of sentence varieties in free writing(Department of English Education, 2010) Paudel, PradipThis is the era of communication. Effective Communication is possible by the harmonious use of sentences. Especially in oral communication and in free writing proper use of situational varieties of sentences increases harmoniousness. The central intention of this research is to see whether the free writing of secondary level students is really effective or not. This thesis entitled "A Study on the Use of Sentence Varieties in Free Writing" is an attempt to find out the recent trends of use of various types of sentences and to find out the most popular variety of sentences used in free writing. For this, the researcher collected and analysed essays (primary data) written by 40 students of Chitwan District in which total five schools consisting three institutional and two community schools of village and town were the sample population. The primary data were analysed by using the descriptive as well as simple statistical method. It was found that students mostly preferred to use declarative, simple, present and active form of sentences in their free writing. Basically, students were found least interested to use interrogative, imperative, exclamatory and optative sentences in their free writing. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, review of related literature, objectives, the definition of terms and significance of the study. The second chapter consists of the methodology in which the sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are mentioned. Lastly, the fourth chapter comprises the findings and recommendations of the study.Item Teachers' Beliefs on Strategies Used in Teaching English(Department of English Education, 2017) Yadav, Jeewan KumarThe present research study entitled ''Teachers' Beliefs on Strategies used in teaching English in various aspects such as pronunciation, grammar, communication, poetry and essay. To meet the objectives of this research, the researcher selected Thirty teachers using purposive non- random sampling procedure from governmental aided schools of Siraha district who were teaching English in basic level. The data were collected with the help of the questionnaire and analyzed in order to find out the teachers' beliefs on strategies of teaching English. It was found that the teachers used different strategies such as modeling method, working with sounds to teach pronunciation. Deductive and inductive approach were used to teach grammar. Interaction, role play, discussion, group work were used to teach communicative approach. Similarly, Pre-reading activities, while-reading activities and post-reading activities were used to teach essays and poetry. There are five chapters in this study. The first chapter deals with general background, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Similarly, chapter two includes the review of the related theoretical literature, review of related empirical literature, implications of the review of the study and conceptual framework. Finally, the references and appendices are included.Item Teaching English in Multilingual Classroom: Challenges and Opportunities(Department of English Education, 2015) Bhandari, Yadav PrashadThis research entitled ‘Teaching English in Multilingual Classroom:Challenges and Opportunities’ was an attempt to find out the challenges faced by the teachers in teaching English in multilingual classes. The respondents for this research were selected by using non random purposive sampling procedure. The primary data were collected from thirty English language teachers and ten head teachers of those thirty selected schools. Questionnaires was the main tool for collecting data. The English language teachers were given closed ended questions and head teachers were given open ended questions. The major finding of this research study was that the teachers dealt with disruptive students immediately and built rapport with their students in course of teaching English as the main classroom management strategies. This thesis has been divided into five different chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study, statement of the problem, rationale of the study, objectives of the study, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Similarly, the second chapter consists of the review of the theoretical literature, review empirical research,implications of the review for the study and conceptual framework for the study. And the fifth chapter of the study consists of summary,conclusions and implications of the study in policy making level and practice level with some directions for the further research.Item Teaching English through animation(Faculty of Education Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2011) Upadhyay, Anju KumariThe thesis entitled “Teaching English Through Animation” was an attempt to find out the effectiveness of animation in teaching English in case of primary level (class two) students in a private English boarding school of Kailali district. The study also aimed to suggest some pedagogical implications which will add something to the existing body of knowledge in ELT. To achieve the objectives of research twenty-five students of class two of Rastriya Higher Secondary School, Baliya, Kailali, were selected purposively. For this purpose, I analysed and interpreted pre-test, post-test, progressive tests as well. I used both primary and secondary sources of the data. The primary sources of the data were the twenty- five students of the school and secondary sources of the data that I used were Midas Edukit, Dorling Kindersley Series, Junior Kinder Garten, Nunan, (1992), Sharma and Phyak (2006), Norton (2009) and grade two English text book. In course of analyzing and interpreting the data, I found that the use of animation in teaching English was effective in the classroom in the case of class two students of Rastriya Higher Secondary School, Baliya, Kailali. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter contains the general background, literature review, objectives, and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology which further contains the sources of data, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Classroom observation, diary were used to prove this objectives. Teachers were found to be using student centered techniques but it could be observed that they lacked practical knowledge in-using them appropriately. Students were heavily dependent upon the teachers. This thesis comprises five chapters. Chapter one is introductory one. Finally, the reference and appendices follow this chapter.Item Use of ICT tools in teaching English at secondary level schools(Department of English Education, 2023) Chemjong Limbu, DipaThis thesis is in title Using ICT Tools in Teaching English at Secondary Level Schools. The purpose of the study is to identify and analyze the problems faced by teachers in teaching while using ICT tools at secondary level in Choubise Rural Municipality and also to find causes of such arising problems and explore the status of ICT tools in schools. The design of the study was qualitative. However, both qualitative and quantitative data were used to conduct this study. In total, four schools were selected for sample by purposeful sampling method. From those schools four senior English teachers who taught secondary level and used ICT tools while teaching were selected. Questionnaire, interviews and observation checklist were used as tools to collect data. The researcher used thematic and descriptive analysis for analyzing and interpreting of data collected from questionnaire and depth interview. Quantitative data which were collected from observation checklist were presented in figure and table. It was found that the main problems faced by the teachers while using ICT in teaching are lack of training, lack of equipment and resource, large volume of students, lack of electricity, lack of confidence and lack of knowledge. The main causes of arousing those problems are economic factors, teacher factors and pedagogical factors. This study has been divided into five different chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study, objective the study, statement of the problems, research question and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of related literature, conceptual framework and the implication of the study. The third chapter consists of the methodology under which source of data, sampling procedures, research tools, process of data collection and ethical consideration. The fourth chapter deals with the finding and analysis of collected data. And the fifth chapter deals with the summary, conclusion and recommendation of the research/study. The selected schools and data collection tools have been included in appendices.
