Item Multiple Translation of the Story 'Chhimeki'(Department of English Education, 2008) Tiwari, Eeba RajThis thesis entitled ‘MULTIPLE TRANSLATION OF THESTORY "CHHIMEKI’ attempts to find out the technique of translation of cultural words. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the techniques of translation of cultural words in the light of their strength and weakness.. It was found that literal translation was the most common and more often used in translating social, religious, material and ecological cultural words. Statistical description helps anecdotal evaluation. Multiple translation provides a basis for translation evaluation. This study has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals on the introduction to the study including general background, objectives of the study, review of the related literature, significance of the study,definition of the terms, symbols and abbreviation. Similarly, the second chapter includes methodology discusses sources of data, sampling procedure, process of data collection and the limitations of the study. The third chapter analyses, interprets and presents the data. The collected data was analyzed descriptively using simple statistical tools such as percentage and average. The researcher has tried to find out strengths and weaknesses of the technique of translation and compare statistical description and anecdotal description. The fourth chapter presents the findings and some pedagogical implications drawn by the researcher.Item A Study of the Cultural Terms in the Translated Version of Anido Pahadsangai(Department of English Education, 2008) Osti, GitaThe present study is entitled ‘A study of the Cultural Terms in theTranslated Version of Anido Pahadsangai’. This thesis attempts to present adescriptive analysisand interpretation of the translation of cultural terms fromNepali into English. The main purpose of this thesis is to find out the mostlyused technique in the translation of the English version of the Novel ‘AnidoPahadasangai’ and the gaps in translation.Two hundred cultural terms fromNepali version of Novel ‘ Anido Pahadsangai’ and the corresponding wordsfrom the English version of the same book were collected for the study. Checklist was used to identify andcategorizethe techniques used in thetranslation.These cultural terms werecategorizingunder five groups as: ecology, materialculture, social culture and organization, religious culture and conceptual terms.Forty terms were listed for each category. The findings of this study show thatnine different techniques were found to have been employed in translatingculturalwords of this novel, they are literal translation, substitution, borrowing,paraphrasing, claque,blending, sense translation, addition, and deletion.Among them literal translation is the most frequent which covers 38.5% andblending is the least one which covers only 1.5%. Similarly six causes of gapsare marked in the study. Among them, gap caused by lack of note or definitionis highly frequent and gap caused by deletion isleast frequent one. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study interms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives andsignificant of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology under whichsources of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study arepresented. Chapter third is the core of the study, which presents statisticalanalysis and interpretation of the data. Descriptive and analytical approach wasused. Chapter four discusses the findings of the study. On the basis of findingssome recommendations andpedagogical implications are drawn.Thereferences and appendix are the concluding parts of the study.Item A Study on the Techniques and Gaps in Translating Cultural Terms : A Case of The Novel ‘Mother’(Faculty of English Education, 2009) Pokhrel, SitaThis research is entitled"The Techniques and Gaps in Translating Cultural Terms:A Case of the Novel Mother". It is an attempt to find out the techniques and their frequency employed in translating cultural terms and to observe and classify the gaps in the translation by using different techniques.For this study, the data were collected from English and Nepali versions of the novel 'Mother'. In this research work two hundred cultural terms were selected and identified. Those terms were categorized into five categories.The researcher selected fifty terms with focus on translational gaps.In translating cultural terms of the novel ‘Mother’,nine different techniques have been employed.There are many instances of the use of non-corresponding meaning components, which lead gaps in translation. So the meaning gaps exist between SL terms and TL terms. Six types/causes of gaps are found in this study. This study is divided into four main chapters.The first chapter introduces the study in general background, literature review, objectives, significance of the study and definition of specific terms.The second chapter, i.e. methodology includes the sources of data, sampling, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study.The third chapteris devoted to an analysis andinterpretation of the collected data. In this chapter, data are analyzed and interpreted through statistical and descriptive approach.The fourth and the last chapter deals with the findings of the study on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of data. This research is based on 200cultural terms from theselected novel.The researcher usednon-randomjudgmentalsamplingprocedure to samplethe cultural terms.Onlyobservationwastheresearchtool for data collection.On the basis of thecollecteddata, the analysis has been done. Afteranalysis,it was found that tentechniquesare used in translated novel'Palpasa Cafe'.Literal translation is the most used technique where asnaturalizationis theleast used technique and four types of gap existed in the translated version ofthe novel. On the basis of findings, somerecommendations have been made for pedagogical implications.Item The Techniques and Gaps in Translation of Cultural Terms: A Case of Muna-Madan(Central department of English Education, 2012) Bhattarai, NirmalaThe present research work entitled 'The Techniques and Gaps in Translation of Cultural Terms: A Case of Muna Madan' is an attempt to find out the techniques employed in translation of Nepali cultural terms into English version of Muna Madan and to point out the gaps in translating process contextually. The data for the study was collected from Muna Madan and its English translated version. In this research work, one hundred cultural terms were identified and those terms were categorized into five categories as ecology, material culture, religious culture social culture and organization and conceptual terms. Findings of the study show that nine different techniques were found to have been employed in translating cultural words of Muna Madan. Literal translation, transference, substitution, claque, blending, deletion, and sense translation have been applied in translation of cultural words. Among them, literal translation was the most frequent one which covered 30% and deletion was the least one which covered 1% of the total cultural words. The techniques such as literal translation, transference, substitution and elaboration are found as techniques to translate the cultural terms. Very few instances of gaps were found in translation process because of the use of inappropriate techniques. In most of the cases, gaps were existed while translating through substitution. Other gaps were existed through the use of elaboration, substitution, literal, deletion and substitution. This study is divided into four chapters. Every chapter consists of necessary headings and sub headings. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the literature, objectives and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the methodology under which sources of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Chapter three is the core study, which presents statistical analysis and interpretation of the data. Descriptive and analytical approaches are used to analyze the data. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the techniques oftranslation of cultural words and to find out the gaps. For this purpose, the researcher collected two hundred cultural terms ascorpus of data for the study from Nepali version of the novel Kumari Shobha andthe corresponding words from the English version of the same book. He selectedonly one hundred and fiftycultural terms out of a total number. He categorizedthem into five different categories. Findings of the study show that ten differenttechniques such as literal, addition, deletion, claque black translation, borrowing,definition, are to be found to havebeen employed in translating cultural words ofthe novel. Among them literal translation was most frequent which covers 29%and couplet was the least one which covers 1%. Similarly, six types of gaps werefound in this study. The main purpose of thisstudy wasto identify and categorize the basic features of cultural terms andpoint out the techniques and their frequencies.The data for the study werecollected from the novel 'Mother' and its Nepali translated version 'Āmā'. Inthis research work one hundred and fifty cultural terms were identified andthose terms were categorized into five categories as ecology, material culture,religious culture, social culture and organization and conceptual terms.Findings of the study showthat ten different techniques were found to havebeen employed in translating cultural words of the novel 'Mother'. For thisstudy different techniquessuchas: literal translation, borrowing, substitution,claque, deletion, blending, paraphrasing, addition, sense translation andmistranslation have beenapplied in translationofcultural words.
